Name your favorite game for a specific system

Postby ActRaiser1 » February 23rd, 2007, 11:37 am

Okay, new topic and with an old school flavor.  Name your favorite game for any system you want.  You can list multiple systems but only one game per system.

So, pick you favorites. To get things started I'll go with the Atari 2600 and Dreamcast first as they were easy choices for me.  Also, no arguing as each of these are just opinions and there will always be games that are in other genres you might like better.

Atari 2600 - Riverraid

I can remember my dad and I trying to get a little further each time but never succeeding in making it all the way to the end.  Not even sure if there was an end.  A fantastic experience of balance versus reward in upping your score by shooting the fuel at the last second or sucking it up completely to fly a bit further.

Dreamcast - Soul Caliber

Hands down my roommates and I during college/shortly after have spent more time with this game on this console than any other.  The sequel 5 years later was a minor graphical update which only goes to show how awesome the original was.

okay, a couple of more after thinking about it for a bit.

Xbox - Knights of the Old Republic

So far the only game that actually made me "feel" for a character.  I got sad for the alien that was being picked on by the bully kids.  He couldn't fight back or he'd be killed by the police.  The rest of the game was just top notch altogether.

PS - Metal Gear Solid

I loved how everything tied together and the story flowed so well.  There were so many "Ahh, gotcha" moments.  Funny, I'm not a fan of the series any more but that one was for me the higlight on the PS.

PS2 - Guitar Hero

Easy to learn, hard to master, with an awesome sound track this game just excudes fun.

SNES - ActRaiser

This one was the easiest for me.  Awesome graphics, sound, and story.  Everything just tied so well together.

PS1: Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

One of my favourite PlayStation games to this day. I played this game for months on end, but to this day, I still haven't rescued all 99 Mudokons.

PS2: Kingdom Hearts

A toss-up between this and Final Fantasy X, but I've lost interest in the Final Fantasy series lately (I don't even own FFX anymore, as I traded it to a friend in exchange for this game). Not as good as Zelda, but still a superb title. (The sequel's a bit disappointing gameplay-wise, though.)

Dreamcast: Hydro Thunder

This was one of the few video games that my dad could actually beat me at. Superb boat-racing title, even better with a friend.

Xbox: Halo

Never played this in multiplayer, but enjoyed the single-player very much. Not much replay value, though.

GameCube: Metroid Prime

I thought Halo was the bees' knees (no pun intended) until I played this. This game sucked me in and didn't let go; quite possibly the most atmospheric game I've ever played.

N64: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

The main reason I wanted an N64, though seven years late. I got an N64 for Christmas '05 and this was one of the games I got with it. After playing it, it wasn't hard for me to see why most people call it the best Zelda game ever.

Nintendo DS: Another Code: Two Memories (aka Trace Memory)

I'm not usually a fan of adventure games (Space Quest IV being a notable exception), but this game's story was so gripping it was hard to put down.

GBA: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga

This game revived my flagging interest in RPGs. The funniest game I've played in ages.

Quick run through:

Atari 2600:          Vangard
Atari 800XL:         Boulder Dash
Sega Master System:  Choplifter
NES:                 Super Mario Bros. 3
Genesis:             Dragon's Fury
SNES:                Super Mario World
Jaguar:              Tempest 2000
Saturn:              Sega Rally Championship
Playstation:         Wipeout 3
N64:                 Beetle Adventure Racing
Dreamcast:           Hydro Thunder
PS2:                 Shadow of the Colossus
GameCube:            TimeSplitters 2
XBox:                Halo 2
Wii:                 Excite Truck
XBox 360:            Burnout Revenge

At least that's what came to mind when I typed this up, probably forgot some game(s) I used to like better.  I seem to favor shooters & platformers from 8 & 16-bit eras, racing & FPS from 32-bit to present (imagine that).

Favorite games are often hard to pick, especially when, like the 2600 and NES, there are so MANY. That said:

2600: Pitfall 2
5200: Joust
INTV: Burgertime
Colecovision: Ladybug (my favorite GAME by far!)
NES: Super Mario Bros. 2
SNES: Super Mario World
Genesis: (very hard to pick ONE but) Thunderforce 3

and DS: Super Mario World
