Best Shoot 'em ups?

Postby JesusSaves » September 19th, 2010, 6:06 pm

I recently have found an interest in scrolling Shmups like Gradius and MUSHA. And those are pretty much the only ones I own . So what are your favorite scrolling shoot 'em ups?

I like Lifeforce (NES) and R Type (Turbografix). I also enjoyed Gradius Rebirth on Wiiware.

I like Blazing Lazers on Turbografx-16 and River Raid on Atari 2600. I haven't played very many shmups. I'm kinda just now starting to get into the genre.

Best Shoot 'em ups?

Here's my personal top tier of the games I've played:

1) Fire Shark (Genesis)
2) Musha (Genesis)
3) Radiant Silvergun (Saturn)
4) Life Force (NES)
5) Galactic Attack (Saturn)

I like the Thunderforce series, but not as much as everyone else.  I play Axelay from time to time, but don't get far enough to rate.  Ikaruga was okay on the Gamecube, but I thought it was very overrated, especially after playing Radiant Silvergun, its cousin.

I might agree with you, Pixelcade. That is, if my Colecovision worked.

Prehistoric Island, an 80's SNK arcade shooter, lots of eye candy, lots of fun. Too bas there's no
console version, Mame may be your best friend with this one. There are other shmups I like, but I thought I'd mention this one, as an hidden gem.

I said Shoot 'em Up, not Run and Gun, but thanks anyway

I'm currently trying to snag Robo Aleste, the sequel to MUSHA, off of Ebay.

I'm guessing you've got a Genesis/Megadrive?

  Gaiares
  Steel Empire
  Truxton

If you've got a SNES...

  Axelay
  Gradius III

There are also versions of Raiden for various systems, too.
