Repairs aren't cheap though. Better off going to look for another used one instead.

 

I love having only 480i CRT screens. My N64 gets used far more than any other system and using that with a HDTV would be a disaster. Then there's dvd's. When people buy a HDTV they then yell and scream dvd's look terrible. But DVD's look great on an SDTV especially tv shows.

I can empathize with the logistical challenge a big CRT presents. I have a two door car and know the pain of moving a 200 pound TV up three flights of stairs! As for the broken Sony, you may want to find a repair shop that offers free estimates. If the repair is $50 or more you may want to shop for a replacement. Since flat panel tv's have become the standard, my local Goodwill has been littered with big CRT's. I've bought a 27" Sony Trinitron and a 32" JVC Cinema Series both for $25 each. My best goodwill TV score was just a few months ago when I bought a 32" Sony Wega Trinitron for $40! TV's like the Wega are perfect for all 6th gen and older systems and the CRT won't get any dead pixels from my 3 year old pointing on the screen!

I bought a 27" Trintitron today from the local Salvation Army store.  Switched the 27" Panasonic with it and am quite pleased with the better picture (I LOVE old school games on a flat screen tube).  Atari 5200 Gremlins never looked better.

I know bigger is usually better (that's what she said) but have always enjoyed the one-man portability that a 27-incher offers.  I have two in reserve now.  I have no desire to ever have to deal with connecting an Intellivision to a plasma or HD television.

I do believe that in the next five years or so it will become quite difficult to find a tube (CRT) TV.  While they are big & bulky if you can store an extra one or two I would suggest doing so.

This is a good point.  I have told a lot of family and friends to save their old TVs for me.  The good news is, you really don't need anything bigger than a 27".

Trinitron/Wega's are excellent CRT TV's.  I stuck with these Sony models for a long time, but the last time I upgraded my SDTV I ended up getting a JVC I~Art because that year JVC's model actually outperformed the Sony Wega (Wega was the newer iteration of the Trinitron technology) that year.  Been super happy with it.

I do all of my old school gaming on that JVC, but also including my Wii (component 480i looks soooooo much better on my SDTV than component 480p on my HDTV) on it as well.  HD consoles are regulated to the 55" Samsung LED in the living room.
