Can you fix your Mario Brox. XE review?

Postby Leo1 » February 25th, 2012, 11:12 pm
The sound in the NES version was nice.  But the graphics???  Very comparable to the 7800 version and a major step down from the arcade (and XE).  You LOVE squished turtles!
To me, the 7800 and NES versions look far more like the arcade game.

XEGS

7800

NES

Arcade

Different taste I suppose.

Look at the turtles, much closer in the XE version.  Other animated characters were also fuller in the XE version; check the flashing crap legs in the NES version.  Yes, the platforms are very different in the XE version, and some of the colors are different too.  But other details, like the circular things on the pipes, are only all there in the XE version.  The only home version which was more faithful to the arcade (and every bit as detailed) was the Famicom .nds or European "classic serie" cartridge for NES (which were the same thing, except the European game didn't have some strange Japanese cereal advertisement built in)...

Actually, I just checked, even Classic Serie doesn't have the wheels on the pipes...

Can you fix your Mario Brox. XE review?

Sure, I can re-review this one.  I can unleash it on my friends one day (along with the 5200 version) and get their objective thoughts as well.

Thanks. Am I the only person who enjoys playing the game alone and trying to rack up every possible point?  That's why I prefer the slower versions like XE solo, especially on the higher levels where everything just feels like dumb luck on the faster versions... But if you are going to play mario brothers with friends and you have the equipment, I hear that you can have FOUR players can go at it simultaneously on the GBA version...

That's correct, but note that the GBA version is more of a remake than a port, and plays very differently (and is much less challenging).

Didnt want to start a new topic for this game so I figured I would put it here.in your review of Mario Bros. for the 5200 you made a error describing the game.Mario & Luigi are not cousins.

You now have -5 pts on your Nintendo license.

Actually, I find that despite a bit of scrolling and the extra "Pow," the play is similar.  Yes, it's easier, but at higher levels that makes it more fun than just dumb luck.  Which is, again, why I prefer the XE version...  Once you know how to play the game, the early levels are easy even in "fast" versions like the 5200, so for me it's about finishing up the Board quickly and getting all the coins...
