Best 2-player games

Postby Turnquest1 » March 12th, 2012, 9:08 am

I'm putting together a list of the best 2-player games ever made, for use in my emulator setup. Both vs and co-op games. Anything from Combat on Atari 2600 to arcade games, but focus will be on classic games (pre-Playstation).

Any suggestions as to which games would qualify for such a list?

I much prefer co-op titles, but Mario Brothers is my favorite head to head.

For co-op, Contra has to be my favorite, with double dragon II being second on NES. Golden axe  is the best on the Genesis.

Super Dodgeball for NES immediately comes to mind.

Joust (vs or co-op, depending on how you want to play).  Warlords.  Gauntlet.  Any scrolling shooter that allows coop...

Great titles have already mentioned, I thought I'd tell you guys about Super Gachapon World. A Super Famicom game set in the Gundam universe, it's
as much a wargame as it is a VS fighter, with a "fighting engine" you won't find
anywhere else. Much like Bomberman, the solo mode is so so, but the multiplayer mode really shines.

Great games! Mario Bros and Joust are real classics. As well as Gauntlet and Warlords - but I'm saving these for my best 4-player games list...

I haven't tried World Class Track Meet and Super Dodge yet, but I sure will. Same with Contra. I don't have too much experience with the NES, so these suggestions are very welcome. Super Gachapon World seems interesting too.

I'd recommend Trog and Spot for the Nintendo. Trog is a 2-player coop pacman clone with dinosaurs and cavemen; you're the dinosaurs, the cavemen are the ghosts and the powerpellet turns you into a t-rex that can eat the cavemen. It's a good deal easier than PacMan because you can actually fight back by punching the cavemen, but it also has more variety. Spot is a simple puzzle game for 1-4 players. It's very addictive and can get heated.

I'd also recommend any Puyo Pop clone. My personal favorite is Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine on the Genesis (good music). Once two people know how to play it gets crazy.
