This is a scary adventure on a haunted ship someone recommended to me.
So far it's really good! Yes, it's slow, but there is an underlying intensity about the game. There's this floating girl ghost who is pretty terrifying.
Also the graphics are surprisingly rich for a PS1 title.

Thanks for posting this. A game set aboard a haunted ship sounds right up my alley. I found a old IGN review for it that was also very complimentary.

It also mentions a sequel that had just been released in Japan. I hope that made it over here as well.

Indeed, Echo Night Beyond has a cool 'health system'; your heart rate. If it gets too high you die.
Naturally, it raises and lowers depending on your proximity to disturbing things.

Echo Night II was never released in the USA unfortunately.
Echo Night: Beyond is basically part 3 and was released here. It is an excellent game.

This is also a good time to mention that the Critic hasn't dipped his toe into the King's Field universe up until now (I consider the Echo Night series a branch of the larger tapestry).
I know the Critic isn't really one for rpg's, but there's something to be said for the fact that these are real-time, world-exploring undertakings with plenty of action (although not of the mindless fps variety).
The games I'm talking about are:
King's Field - ps1
King's Field II - ps1
Shadow Tower - ps1
Eternal Ring - ps2
King's Field: The Ancient City - ps2
Shadow Tower: Abyss - ps2

Echo Night 2 has a homebrew English localization.

I know what I'll be firing up when the day comes that I own a modded Playstation that can play ISO images off a SD card.
