The price of retro gaming

Postby C64_Critic1 » December 1st, 2013, 5:30 pm

Here's another great example of how crazy things have gotten - this wasn't even high on my 'get' list, but figured I'd take a crack at it since I know that auctions of this game are few and far between.  I can't imagine paying this much even for an all-time favorite game:

Wow. $350 for an opened 'as is' 30 year old CIB floppy game. That floppy could be a 5.25 inch coaster by now. While I did not know this game even existed, it would have to come hand delivered by Jennifer Connelly herself on that coin op horse from Career Opportunities to warrant that. Is this some holy grail to C64 collectors?

Since the plot involved David Bowie as a baby snatching Goblin King, maybe its a game for Halloween 2014 -- via some economical means.

Yeah, that's pretty insane but that's not the worst of them. I was watching a Magical Chase turbografx auction recently and the auction ended at over $5000. I really wish I would have collected all these games like 10 years ago (or even 5) because they would have been drastically cheaper.

I would never bid that much for a video game, that's just insanity.

I remember, once upon a time (actually, about 10 years ago), I went into a Gamestop and bought a used copy of Earthbound or about $25. Just look at the prices now!

Well, it's actually a rare game, so I'd say it was a good deal with all things considered. Try finding it again. At the very least rare TG-16 and NES games come up fairly often. I think it's just a testament of how rare it is. People just love to grieve because they see the price and don't consider the value.

I have a complete big box copy of Earthbound someone gave me in the late 90's. Looking back, I'm not even sure who this was, it's been too long!

It's silly to compare the price of an old game to what it was, say, 10 years ago. Of course it's going to have become rarer in that time and hence more expensive.
