Best Music in a game icon

Postby VideoGameCritic » January 17th, 2014, 3:20 pm

I'm close to introducing an new icon I've wanted to add for some time: "best music is a game".  Mark is still working on the icon design so any suggestions are welcome.

Obviously this is a very arbitrary icon, but I'd like your suggestions as to what games truly deserve it.

Of the top of my head, I think Streets of Rage definitely is one.  Also, my new review for Sonic 3D Blast for the Saturn seems deserving.

Which games do you think deserve this distinction?  A lot of games have great music, but what are the best in your opinion?

Terminator for the Sega-CD has some mindblowing music, as does Gate Of Thunder for the Turbo-CD(I also love the soundtrack for Lords of Thunder, though I know that one isn't your thing).

I'll second Streets Of Rage, SOR 2 also has pretty awesome music, SOR3's music is OK but not quite as good.  There's also the Earthworm Jim games.

Pretty much any Sonic game has amazing music, Sonic 1, 2 and 3, Sonic CD, 3-D Blast as you said in your Saturn review(though the Genesis version also has a great soundtrack), both Sonic Adventure games, Heroes, Unleashed, Colors, 06, Lost World, Shadow, etc.

BTW, do licensed songs count?  If so I would definitely say the GTA series excells in that department(as does Saints Row)

Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3 have some great tracks. Also Golden Axe has some very memorable tracks (yeah I love Sega).

All of the Mega Man games deserve it. I'd also give it to Castlevania II: Simon's Quest for Bloody Tears. Chrono Trigger has some awesome music too.

Kirby Epic Yarn is a stand out.

Mario Galaxy games are very good.

Zelda 2 is fantastic, as is Mario 3, pretty iconic soundtracks.

Anything by Yuzo Koshiro.

Naturally, that includes ActRaiser.  [tongue]

Per Wikipedia ActRaiser was awarded Best Music of 1993 by Electronic Gaming Monthly.[12]

Yuzo composed the Streets of Rage games as well.  His wikipedia article is pretty interesting.  Ys1/Ys2 also got great reviews from back in the day.

Super Mario 64

Between the catchy File Select, the meditative water stages, the freaking creepy Final music, the rewarding staff roll, even the theme that plays if you ignore those chomping plants for a moment and let 'em sleep.

Here's the whole darn OST if you don't believe me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgVUipXiqOc

Just about any Metroid game.

A Boy and His Blob has my favorite soundtrack of any game in recent years.

Also, how about Nintendo Land?  It's a veritable Nintendo Greatest Hits collection.
