Nintendo cut's to sales projection for 3DS and Wii U.

Nintendo only have themselves to blame for the system's failure, if you ask me it's silly to "lose faith" in the industry just cause Nintendo were counting their chickens before they hatched. They let the success of the Wii get to their heads and assumed that people would buy the system regardless of anything else.

The Wii U would not have failed had they put more effort into getting better third-party support(something that's been a problem for Nintendo for many years now) and consequently a better selection of games, or had they marketed the system better.  To this day people are still confused as to whether the Wii U is a new system or just an upgrade, and that's definitely hurt sales.

For me the golden age of gaming has barely begun, Xbox represents everything I love, I dig cinematic hyper-realistic games and military shooters, though that's not to say I don't like Nintendo's brand of gaming as well. I'm happy to own a 3DS, but so far i've seen no compelling reason to buy a Wii U, it just dosen't have that many games that look interesting to me.

Nintendo always puts out quality software? What a joke. Wii Music? I love how people think that the game industry has all of a sudden changed. It has been heading in this direction for twenty years! Also, Xbox and playstation have plenty of small, terrific indie games. The whole notion that all they have is big cinematic games is simply not true. The WiiU is dead and Nintendo only has to thank their out of touch, naive and pompous selves to thank for it.

Lets not forget the PS Vita apparently sold less than 100k in December, that is about 1/5 of Wii U. It's not just Nintendo. Those are terrible numbers, unimaginable 5 years ago.

The game industry has changed, dramatically. It will continue to change, dramatically.

There is no point in Nintendo fighting it out with Sony and MS, they do not have the hardcore hivemindshare, and never will. They do not make violent games. For the most part, they do not make cinematic games. The media does not appreciate what they DO do well, they want gaming to be an 'art form' and they want to be emo'd by cliched cut scenes and man child drama.

Nintendo needs to do whatever it takes to recapture the mainstream game market, and put their software in a position to compete.....3DS has a solid base, open the flood gates. They have no major committed western 3rd party support anyway, and have to make deals (usually) to get major Japanese third party support. Take short term hits to figure out a half way medium into new pricing avenues. Almost all of their software drivers are in house, very easy to change your own house, you have already lost the major 3rd party players anyway.  This would create a buzz for your machines.

Join the crowd and devalue game prices. Why help hold down the top end anymore? They have been abandoned.

I'm hoping that Nintendo can turn this around this year if they prop up their thin Wii U library.

One thing I do not want to see if for them to sell-out and start making software for other devices.  It would cheapen their brand.  Remember Sonic?  Also, it would give people no reason to buy their hardware.

The last thing I'd like to see is for Nintendo to become the next Sega, who are currently residing in the "where are they now" file.

I don't see that happening, they're just doing too well with the handheld market, pretty much shutting out anyone they can. Since 1989,only the PSP really remained competitive.

It's true there are smart phones now,but they don't seem to be the have the hardcore thing going on. Hell Pokemon alone could probably float Nintendo through it all if they were to go down.

Nintendo the next Sega? I just don't see it anytime soon.

Steer- Please stop sterotyping and insulting everyone who dosen't share your opinion by saying they are "emo'd" and wanting "man child drama" and other nonsense like that, it just makes you sound ridiculous.  Oh and Nintendo may not have developed violent games, but they have no qualms about getting exclusive M-rated titles like Madworld and the No More Heroes series, plus they get ports of plenty of games like COD and Resident Evil.

Repeat #999999999, new games are bad!

You should consider 'Pong', it has slightly less cut scenes than... Um, Paper Football!

I stand by it, and will take the heat.

Look no further than the ridiculous and insufferable hype for 'The Last of Us' as a 'story game' for the medium - it does not get any more generic. Sorry, I have higher standards. And they are not even high standards, they are just standards.

The Western game makers are undeniably obsessed with violence, and it works. But again, we see a dearth of variety and very little innovation in game play. Non violent mega hit games (excluding licensed sports games, which are also in a creative and quality rut, in general) generally come from either Nintendo or on mobile. Guitar Hero was one of the last great examples for consoles, Skylanders too, other than that, this industry has become a one trick pony.

You love it, that's fine, you are getting what you want and more on the way. Others want more from the industry than what it is offering, and are not impressed to see gaming traveling down this road.

Listening to music evolves, watching movies evolves and playing video games will evolve. You can wax lyrical about the good old days but companies have to cater for the biggest consumer market. Companies who can evolve and stay with the times will survive, those who can't won't. The video game industry is no different to any other industry in that regard.

Nintendo will I'm sure evolve if that means their IP's are available on other devices then providing they keep their quality control I'm all for it.

I couldn't agree more with the statements above.  One of my favorite games last gen was an indi on the 360, Miner Dig Deep.  Freaking awesome 2d game among hundreds of other great games on both the PS3 and the 360.  I know some on here cannot possibly fathom the idea of good games on other consoles, but that's their loss.

The Wii U in a few years will move on out and I'm hopeful in it's place will come a more powerful machine with an Eternal Darkness sequel (not by Silicon Knights) and Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron IV.

Those games for the Gamecube were some of my favorites of that entire generation.  If Nintendo can't come up with anything original, at least go back and look at some of their finest games published to date.
