No good reason to buy a PS4 or Xbox One

Postby Leo1 » December 6th, 2014, 1:08 am
A Resident Evil remake is set to be released digitally only for $20.
It's a HD remastering of a remake that was first created for the GameCube and subsequently ported and rereleased on the Wii.

And besides being digital instead of on a physical disc, it also has videogaming's version of pan & scan. Rather than create picture where previously there was none to fill your widescreen (Resident Evil in all its forms was always 4:3), they're instead cropping the picture vertically and zooming in to accomplish it. So in actuality, you'll be seeing less than ever before even though it fills your HDTV.

There's an option for full 4:3, but then you're losing one of the reasons why this edition is supposed to be desirable. And I'd approach with caution after Resident Evil 4: HD ended up being Resident Evil 4: Upscaled Edition rather than actually being remastered. If this isn't even fully revamped for 1080p (720p on the 360/PS3 versions), what's really the point for folks like ourselves?

The Wii version is still a pretty game, can be had new for $15 right now on Amazon (A $5 savings and you actually own it), your HDTV or Wii U can upscale it, your picture won't be cropped, and you'd have support for Wii remotes/nunchucks, Classic Controllers, and GameCube gamepads.

It's still nice for those of us that don't own a Gamecube.

Yeah, but it's still nice to be able to play the game without having to get one.

You don't have to get a GameCube to have access to a disc version of this remake.

As I said, the GameCube remake was ported and rereleased to the Wii. And I suspect that it's safe to say that the percentage of members at this community that don't have access to a Wii or Wii U is likely under 25%.

This download definitely has its place and it's quite possible that they're doing a fine job with remastering it in HD. But the point was that members of this community would be wise to give it a bit of extra consideration due to alternatives that are available.

Well I don't have a Wii either, so my point still stands, and unlike most people on here I prefer to collect for one console system at a time, so i'd rather not have to deal with acquiring libraries for two consoles at once, I already have a lot on my plate with all the PC, handheld and 360 titles I still have not yet got around to playing.

I don't know if the topic alone deserves thread so I'll post it here.

That 20th Anniversary PS4 commemorating the PSOne is by the majority on Ebay now, and those who plan on keeping it forever are either bragging about it on Blogger, Youtube, etc. or tear it out of the package like animals.

Over a sub twenty grand? People are idiots I swear to god.
