And I co-incidentally ordered Golvellius a few hours ago. Go figure

Nice to see the SMS get some love. I liked the reviews although I might end up picking up Penguin Land anyway. The guy at segadoes.com did a review for the game not to long ago and he seemed to like it more. I'll probably give it a shot once I start picking up some more SMS games (it'll probably be a while though).

Awwwww. I'm about the farthest thing from a SMS fan that there is but I actually really like Golvellius when I played it for the first time 3 years ago. I understand it's one of the better Master System games. I didn't think the controls were all that bad, but it's been a while.

Thanks for the SMS reviews. I've always been an SMS fan, and I think it's because my best friend in middle school had one, and we had a blast with it, particularly with Outrun, Choplifter, Astro Warrior, Gangster Town, and Phantasy Star, which really impressed me at the time.
I agree with the Penguin Land review, but I rather liked Golvellius. It was created by the legendary company Compile for the MSX computer originally. Golvellius 2 for the MSX is even better. It's more like Golvellius 1.5, with better graphics and gameplay.
Aerial Assault is a fun blastathon

I was surprised by the review of Golvellius, I never played it but I had only read good things about it. In fact, it was chosen as the 16th best game on the system in a poll conducted by SMS fans. I guess it can join Alex Kidd in Miracle World and form a "SMS classics the Critic doesn't like that much" club...

First of all, I'm glad to hear some people like Golvellius. All games need love - good or bad. One person's trash is another's treasure.
However, I would most like to hear from people who have playing it recently (preferably now). Memories tend to get distorted over time. It would be interesting if someone could play this now and related their honest experience.

I'm frankly shocked at golvellius' score. I think it's an amazing game and I only discovered it like 5 years ago. I think it's on par with the original Legend of Zelda and even surpasses it in some ways (Especially if you use FM sound)

Originally an MSX game, Golvelllius is a serious contender for the best Master System Zelda like, Golden Axe
Warrior being another strong title as well. It really is a classic, but Dave nailed it, there's no accounting for taste.

One thing I'm surprised you didn't mention critic is the 3 different gameplays/views it offers. Yes, it has the overhead view, ala Zelda, and the sidescrolling view ala zelda 2, but it also has the vertical views. I thought that was pretty cool and can't think of any action rpgs that offers that. Pretty unique.
