Digital games you think the Critic would enjoy
(Sorry if this topic was already made)
Here's my very small list of games that the VGC should check out. I feel like they do a good job of capturing the essence of the 8 and 16-bit era.
Shovel Knight: A couple of reviewers said that this game is how we remember the 8-bit platformers of our youth. I couldn't agree more. Great controls, style, music, level design and bosses. Grade: A (played on Wii U)
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: I am about halfway or a little more than that through this one and so far I'm really enjoying it. Take what I just said about Shovel Knight and make it 16-bit and mix it with Metroid. Grade: ? (playing on Wii U)
Hotline Miami: Brutal, fast and fun successor to games like Smash TV, with a bit more emphasis on stealth and improvisation. Amazing soundtrack and extreme gore combine into a hypnotic formula. Difficult but rewarding. Grade: A (played on PS3)
Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number: Not as tight as the first, but still contains many of it's strengths. Levels go on too long and are much bigger making it unnecessarily hard. There is also a greater emphasis on guns this time. It's still a blast though. Grade: B (played on PS4)
Axiom Verge: This isn't out yet. All I can say is that I'm anxiously awaiting it's arrival. Looks very promising. Getting the PS4 version.
Any games you guys would recommend?

Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death- cheesy but fun God of War rip-off that heavily evokes 90s action films.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and Temple of Osiris- Both are solid adventure spin-offs from the Tomb Raider series.
Dead Rising 2: Case West, interesting epilogue to Dead Rising 2, still retains the fun gameplay.

I second the recommendations of Shovel Knight and Hotline Miami (haven't got to play the sequel yet). Hotline Miami in particular is one of the best games I've ever played.
Shadow Complex: Super Metroid meets Metal Gear Solid (Xbox Live Arcade)
Skullgirls: Quirky fighting game that plays like a cross between Marvel Vs Capcom 2 and Guilty Gear. Beautiful hand-drawn art somewhere between American and Japanese animation in style. Bizarre characters that all play very differently than each other. (currently Xbox Live Arcade and PS3; upgraded version coming to PS4 and Vita soon)
Super Meat Boy: Difficult and extremely fun platformer with great music and a fast-paced, die-and-try-again mentality. (Xbox Live Arcade)

@billydee - I've played the demo for Axiom Verge and I would say your hype for it is totally justified. I plan on buying it release. It's next week I believe.
I will add some of my own:
Jamestown+: The lost colony (PS4) - a shmup in the vein of the DonPachi series (the team even thanks Cave in the credits) but looks like a snes game. It's great and the perfect entry point for those wanting to get into danmaku or bullet hells.
Guacamelee (PS3/PS4/Vita) - a metroidvania with insanely addictive combat. A must play for fans of the subgenre.
Hard Corps Uprising (PS3) - Contra in everything but name and beautiful anime visuals.

Here are som free indie games on PC that Dave will most likely enjoy:
Rokko Chan (Japanese flash-game tribute to 8-bit Mega Man):

Mega Man 7 Famicom & Mega Man 8 Famicom (8-bit demakes of said Mega Man games):

Wide Pixel Games (Specializes in Toaplan-style STGs, as well as a couple unique games):
http://www.widepixelgames.com
Locomalito (Spanish indie developer that specializes in late-1980s arcade game tributes as well as a couple unique games):
http://www.locomalito.com
Super Mario Bros. X (Super Mario Bros. w/multiple playable characters):

Streets of Rage Remake (Fully fleshed-out remake Streets of Rage using every element of all the games with newer things added in):
http://www.soronline.net/sorr.htm
Abobo's Big Adventure (Parody game with multiple NES game references):
http://abobosbigadventure.com
For flash games and games that don't recognize POV Hats (D-pad) you will need an app called JoyToKey, which allows for your controller to do keyboard inputs.

Really, there are lots of quality indie games out there; no worse than Atari 2600 homebrew development.

I was all about the Streets of Rage Remake, but I can't get it to work on my Xbox. I downloaded the zip file, unzipped in the contents on a blank DVD and burned it. But my Xbox says it won't recognize the disc.
From searching around it appears you need a modded Xbox to run this?

Far Cry Blood Dragon. It is a good fun take off of 80s sci fi movies like Cyber tracker.
It is a lot of fun and has the music and feel of a retro title. Also I see the C64 critic would like it on C64 or at the very least a sequel.
The trailer to whet your appetite. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dofacvjRkc
