Fatal Frame Wii U

Postby VideoGameCritic » October 17th, 2015, 8:40 am

There's been some fanfare about this game, but the lack of a North American physical release is shameful! I mean, the Wii U doesn't have a very extensive physical library and not many Mature titles. Unless the game was a real dud, this seems like a missed opportunity.

To be fair, Europe isn't getting a standard physical release either, only a more expensive collectors edition.

In honor of Halloween and the release of a new Fatal Frame, are you going to be reviewing the last entry that we actually properly received (Fatal Frame 3 for the PS2)?

For newcomers intrigued by this, here's an earlier thread on this topic.

Digital exclusivity, no advertising, and a high price point strangling its chances is nothing new for North America where this franchise is concerned. I do however like how they're handling what amounts to a free demo.

We missed out on two excellent Wii entries in this same franchise thanks to Nintendo of America eschewing a successful franchise the moment they got their claws on it. One was even fully translated and available to release in North America months before the backwards compatible Wii U appeared, yet NOA still passed it over despite its quality and the lack of new software offerings for the Wii.

This franchise was successful enough in North America where the first two entries on the PS2 saw significantly upgraded Xbox ports later on, all three PS2 titles were reprinted several years after their original release just to meet demand here, and judging by some PSN numbers a few months after the PS2 originals were released digitally for the PS3, they've even done well for Tecmo there as well.

Yet Nintendo of America has shown next to no interest since day 1.

Critic, about the part where you said about the lack of M rated titles on Wii U/small Wii U physical library game library, here are some fun facts related with the two.

The total Wii U physical disc games released as of October 2015 is 163 worldwide that does not included DLC code games such as Pokemon Rumble U Special Edition or alternative editions like limited/special editions.: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... edit#gid=0

The Sega Dreamcast worldwide library that does not include alternative editions like limited/special editions has around 659 games total if you include both official and unofficial games alike: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Dreamcast_games and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... cast_games

About the part where you say about the lack of M rated titles on Wii U. There is only 21 officially released M rated games on Wii U on the ESRB website, that are not duplicates and/or unrelated games such as Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 and the infamous Aliens: Colonial Marines:. And speaking of Sniper Ghost Warrior 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines, both games are on the ever growing "Everything but Wii U" list by Andrew Eisen: http://www.ign.com/wikis/wii-u/Games_fo ... _but_Wii_U and http://www.ign.com/blogs/andreweisen/20 ... -but-wii-u and https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... utput=html and most of the skipped Wii U game are rated M by the ESRB that are not import only titles.

If both you Dave the Video Game Critic and Rich of ReviewTechUSA: https://www.youtube.com/user/ReviewTechUSA saw that list above, you both will cringe at some of the games on the list, as some of the games such as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse, Sonic the Fighters, Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign, TMNT games, etc are not on the Wii U, even though they all could be on the Wii U! Heck, even shovelware games such as Duck Dynasty the Video Game and Monopoly games are both not on the Wii U! A huge contradiction to the original Wii shovel-ware. The Sega Dreamcast had under 60 games skipping the system that were relevant/relased on both the PS1/N64 respectively.

I would like to here your thoughts on this Dave the Video Game Critic?

I'm skeptical and don't put much stock into this stuff, but several mainstream reviewers are giving this mediocre scores. I suspect though that something like this review from GameXplain, which strikes me as more independent than most outlets, is going to be most accurate for the average gamer. They essentially state that it's flawed, but still very much worthwhile.

As a fan of the franchise, I'm not too concerned even if it has some problems like control issues that drag it down a bit. I'm confident though based off their track record and what I've watched of it in action, that most that play this will give it at least a 75% score (And Fatal Frame fans such as myself probably can bump that up 10%).

Either way, Nintendo of America actually did something intelligent for a change by offering a hefty portion of the opening experience as a free download. So anyone that wants to is free to check it out before purchasing it.

Sounds like Limited Run Games is attempting to secure this one for a physical release. :)

While this latest game experienced a difficult time of it with reviewers, it really shouldn't hold back Fatal Frame fans if it happens. The criticism largely was towards aspects already present in the earlier games or the fully avoidable motion controls. It seems that if you enjoy this franchise and want more of the same, you'll enjoy this one. It's the newcomers that should be wary since some of the conventions of this series don't seem to be as acceptable as they once were.

If it sells out like I'm sure it would, I hope they go for the fully translated Wii remake of Fatal Frame 2 next (Fatal Frame 4 would be amazing to finally see, but it has never been officially translated and I don't see Limited Run Games changing that unfortunate situation).

I wonder what its chances are, since it is Nintendo that we're talking about here.

That would be amazing if they were able to do this. I have been heavily supporting limited run games with each release. They have another one on the fifth I think.
