2016/2/4: Intellivision: Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior
My original reviews of these games were just quick-hitters I wrote around the year 2K. Now they are finally getting the attention they deserve. Enjoy the reviews.

Intellivision "Donkey Kong" looks like a crude prototype or beta version that was given a rushed release. Even Atari 2600 "Donkey Kong" has a Mario that resembles Mario.

Wow I was surprised by how awful Intellivision Donkey Kong looks. For the supposedly most powerful 2nd generation console it is an embarrassment.
It was good to read the home brew review afterwards and see it righted some wrongs.

Good reviews. I remember buying Donkey Kong as soon as I bought my INTV. I think I paid $39.95, which in 1983 dollars would be $1.2 trillion today . I've read that Coleco purposefully put out a garbage INTV version of DK to reinforce the idea that the CV was the superior system.
Haven't played DK Junior (looks pretty decent), but Pong would look good next to INTV DK.

I had an Atari 2600 with Donkey Kong and was disappointed, but as Dave said very playable. I had a friend with an Intellivision and he was like "What the hell is this"? That after he begged his parents to buy it for him. I remember it fondly as a kid because he said the INTV was better, and I said they only had better sports games, where are the arcade games? Great memories of the early 1980's. But yeah DK on the INTV was horrible.

That's Dick Dastardly levels of scheming, brilliant !
Someone once described the 2nd generation as the Wild West. The more I discover from that period the more I'm inclined to agree.

I think thus is what happened too. Coleco got the home console rights to DK, and used them well. After all, they made the Intellivision version. Remember this was the birth of 3rd parties, and console manufacturers were at therir mercy. No one at Mattel could probably stop Coleco doing it, anymore than Atari could stop 3rd parties. Mattel and Coleco had been rivals for years in electronic handhelds, so this was salt in the wound.
As for Dick Dastardly, Coleco played rough with both the Atari 2600 expansion and the Gemini system.
