Favorite Album Closers of All Time?

Postby Retrology » January 29th, 2016, 1:02 am

So I've been listening to a lot of album closers (final song on an album), so I figured I'd post this topic. What are your personal favorites?

Here's my favorites from the top of my head.

Slint: Good Morning Captain
Weezer: Only in Dreams
Jeff Buckley: Dream Brother
Radiohead: Every album closer they ever made
Soundgarden: New Damage
Nirvana: Something in the Way, Where Did You Sleep Last Night
Arcade Fire: Suburbs Continued
Grizzly Bear: Foreground
Bon Iver: Beth/Rest
Outkast: Chonkyfire
Pantera: Hollow
Depeche Mode: Clean
NIN: Hurt/Ripe With Decay
Biggie: Suicidal Thoughts
Beck: Ramshackle
Deftones: Fireal/Moana/Reviere/This Place Is Death

You get the idea. I have loads of them.

Thoughts?

A day in the life is easily the best album closer in history.

Slide Away - Oasis (Definitely Maybe)

That was a great song to close a marvellous debut album.

Actually, Slide Away was the 2nd to last song on Definitely Maybe. I'll go with Something In The Way from Nirvana.

"Cosmia" from Joanna Newsom's Ys, which is also my favorite album of all time.

Probably should describe the Radiohead album closers.

Blow Out: Better than Creep. Includes some nice jazzy guitar before concluding in a whirlwind of noise rock and dream pop. Great closer to the debut of an amazing band.

Street Spirit: Brilliant closer to a brilliant sophomore album. The music and lyrics are as bleak as can be, but include that REM-esque vive I dig.

Tourist: My favorite Radiohead closer. The song itself is amazing, but what particularly stands out is the chorus lyric of "hey man slow down, slow down, idiot slow down, slow down." There was a lot of social commentary in OK Computer, and the Tourist is symbolism for someone trying to rush things in life instead of appreciating the things around him. It's also a precursor to the opening song "Airbag" (a song about reincarnation, especially with the bell at the end and the chorus lyrics.

Motion Picture Soundtrack: Everyone always seems to be into this one. It's a good track off perhaps Radiohead's best album, but I currently can't get into it.

Life in a Glasshouse: Prefer this to MPS; love the jazzy style of it, as well as the surreal opening notes.

Wolf at the Door: Bleak as hell, but a great ending to the black sheep of Radiohead's catalog.

Videotape: Love the minimalist approach from this song. In Rainbows is one of my favorite Radiohead releases, and it ends on a high note.

Seperator: Like MPS, everyone seems to love this song, and it takes a while to get used to, but it ends KOL well.

And yes, Radiohead is my favorite band. Love everything they do.

Back in college when we used to use the playstation 1 as a CD player we'd ...... Well let's just say put ourselves in an alternate state of mind and listen to music. There was some Tool cd that after the music would end a couple minutes later some dude would start preaching. He said something about carrots viewing the upcoming harvest as the holocaust. Then he'd chant over and over "this is necessary". It was pretty freaky and my mind was distorted anyways. Good times!
