Release dates announced for Sega's 3D Classics lineup for the 3DS eShop

Postby Leo1 » November 3rd, 2014, 5:43 pm

Happily, Sega has announced that wave 2's lineup is coming West.

Sadly, no sign of a retail compilation yet like Japan is receiving with 6 of the 13 releases currently out in this line (Along with two 3D SMS games as extras).

Hasn't seemed to be much interest around here for these, thanks I suspect due to their digital distribution. But here's one that just might be worth a few more of you making an exception for.

Looking forward to March 12th. [smile]

They won't have to wait long to get more of mine. Thunder Blade is due next month. [smile]

Fantasy Zone II, Sega's unique arcade interpretation of the 8 bit Master System title that was created in the early 2000's on the very same arcade hardware that the original Fantasy Zone ran on decades earlier, was April's release. A fine game in its own right, although I prefer these arcade sprite scalers.

Sega announced a North American retail collection today of several of these. :)

Image

It will appear on April 26th for $30 and will include the following classics.

Altered Beast (Genesis version)
Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa (The original Master System game)
Fantasy Zone II W (The modern arcade port that runs on the hardware of the original game)
Galaxy Force II
Maze Walker (New, not previously available off the eShop)
Power Drift (New, not previously available off the eShop)
Puyo Puyo 2 (New, not previously available off the eShop)
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Thunder Blade

Perhaps the only thing that doesn't please me here is the lack of any mention of it being volume 1 of hopefully a set. There's no shortage of excellent selections for a 2nd volume that deserves a retail release, so I hope this isn't going to be it. We still need to see the rest of these at retail.

Afterburner II
Ecco the Dolphin
Fantasy Zone (Arcade)
Fantasy Zone (SMS)
Gunstar Heroes
Outrun
Outrun 3D
Shinobi III
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Space Harrier
Space Harrier 3D
Streets of Rage
Streets of Rage 2
Super Hang-On

Really cool they came out with this. 3D does nothing for me though. Between all of the sega collections that have been released, my actual sega games, and my PSP roms, im all set.

On a side note, silly move not giving the Wii U DS/3DS compatibility. I would have probably bought one by now if that was supported.

The forum change sure messed up the formatting on some of my older posts...

I'm not certain anyone here besides me is particularly interested in these, but on the off chance that I'm wrong, Japan's getting a 3rd retail collection. It will include the remaining digital exclusives from Sega's 3D Classics line that have already been released on the eShop, along with an as of yet unannounced bonus game.

The bonus game was selected based on votes submitted by owners of the previous two collections. Here's what lost and ended up in 2nd-5th.

2nd: Virtua Racing
3rd: OutRunners
4th: Gain Ground
5th: Wing War

I really hope it's not just Sonic 3 or some other Genesis game that has been released to death (Or maybe I should hope that it is, considering the region restrictions in place on the 3DS and the excellent possibility it won't be leaving Japan).

And for the record, here's what hasn't appeared on the first two volumes, which will fill up the roster on this upcoming release.

-Afterburner II (Arcade)
-Gunstar Heroes
-Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-Streets of Rage 2
-Super Hang-On (Arcade)

http://nintendoeverything.com/scans-rou ... ries-more/

This actually sounds much more impressive than what initially broke. I guess these Famitsu scans not only state that there are 4 more games (Providing a total much more in line with the past two collections), but also reveal that the arcade version of Turbo Outrun is one of them. :)

I hope this doesn't get lost in the NX shuffle next year. North America needs this collection.
