What a bummer. If there was ever a series that needed to scrap all its code and go back to the drawing board it's Madden. This game hasn't been good since Bill Clinton was in office.

It's funny, because I haven't played a Madden game in roughly 8 years or so. However, when I see the ads and trailers for the game I can tell they're STILL using the same frames of animation from back then. And something about it has always struck me as unnatural.

These games are a slap in the face to football fans and we deserve better.

I have madden 2005 and it is good. Judging by just the grades alone, it sounds like the early to mid 2000's madden games were well-made, as they get A's. It is pretty ironic, reading the critic's reviews, that with all the excitement surrounding new madden games, they just end up being rather meh... in the critic's opinion at least. Although, I would think a lot of gamers may feel that way, unless you are one of those people who look past the quality of the game and only care about having the latest and greatest version of the game with the latest and greatest graphics.

Madden 94 on genesis rocks. I'm seeing C's and D's on these new ones though, I haven't played a new madden game in forever, so don't take my word for it. I did like when I read that this new game had an arcade feel to the gameplay though.

Great review. I got a kick out of there being 27 Maddens since 1990. The first several ones on the Genesis were amazing. That console was perfect for the early Madden games. I remember the very first Madden in 1988, which was exclusively on the computer. It was actually fantastic and gave you the option to create plays and fictional teams, something I'm crazy about, I have to think that was amazing for 1988. Anyways, I probably take way too much pride in having played that first Madden, haha. Anyways I jumped ship when Gameday came out and was more into EA's college football games come the late 90's.

I would probably go a little easier on it than the critic, maybe a B, but then the only thing I can compare it to is recent Madden games and NFL 2k5.

What really disappointed me about this one is the commentary. It's always bad but I had read that they were putting a lot more effort into it this year. Apparently that effort just meant having weekly updates so it is current through the year. Don't get me wrong, I think that it is nice to have topical commentary, but I wish they had instead added more commentary in the base game so I didn't have to hear the same things every single game. I can't tell you how many times a ball thrown to a running back falls incomplete and the commentator says "I guess that's why they call them running backs, not catching backs." It's not even a good line! Plus the commentary so often doesn't match what happened in the game. I've had them say, "the last time they were out they turned the ball over", when I scored a field goal on my last possession.

IMO Madden NFL 2000 on the PlayStation was the closest to emulating the 16-bit era feel.

Hope you don't mind but I changed your username.
I'm trying to run a family board and I thought the name was kind of distasteful.

After further review I downgraded this one to a D, adding a few more comments and a "loading" icon.

Especially after playing the old NFL 2K games, this feels like shoddy workmanship.
