2017/1/20: Genesis: Thunder Force III, Atomic Runner

Postby VideoGameCritic » January 20th, 2017, 5:59 pm

Posted two new Genesis reviews! Thunder Force III is an update, and it retains its A grade. I added a lot more substance to the review, which was 16 years old. Atomic Runner is new, and it's a good one.

Cool, Genesis reviews. I'm a fan of TF3, but never even heard of Atomic Runner. Will try it on Retro-PIE later.

Your review of Atomic Runner inspired me to go get it, and I'm addicted. It's a hell of a lot of fun to play.

Already have Thunder Force III, haven't really gotten around to playing it though.

Retrology - I'm so glad to hear this! I came within a sliver of giving Atomic Runner an A-. It could go either way.

I'd love to hear from more people who go out and try the games I review, to see if their impressions jive with mine.

I like to think I'm usually on target but nobody's perfect.

I'm only a casual shooter fan at best, but your high praise for Thunder Force III made me add it to my to-buy list. Loose copies go for about $30 though, so I'll wait for a deal (like $20) since I don't play shooters much. Thanks for the review.

I just snagged one for $20 on eBay last night so keep an eye out there.

Yeah, there was one up there for $20 that I think was a repro cart, so I passed on it. It was up for a few days, but just sold last night. The official cartridges seem to sell in the $30 area, but I keep checking for a deal.

Ah! I think that's the one I bought! I just took another look at it and compared the cart to the other listings and it does not right. This is why I miss having good retro game shops near me.

I had a gaming party last weekend and we played Atomic Runner on my Retro-Pie. It's pretty hard at first, then my son finally got the hang of things and beat level 1 and some of level 2. At first we didn't realize you could jump on top of enemies, or ride the round things over the lava. So, thanks to VGC's review, I found a hidden gem of a Genesis game and I intend to get much better at it. I'll keep a lookout for the actual cart next time I go cart hunting.

SNES "Thunder Spirits" is practically the game game, for those who don't have a Genesis.
