Andoird game system console?

Postby LS650 » January 25th, 2017, 12:33 pm

Hi. I am thinking of getting some kind of Android based gaming console, say something along the lines of the Ouya but more current. I would want to have it connected to my TV via HDMI and use it for emulation of 8-bit pre-NES systems: 2600, Coleco, Intellivision, Vectrex, etc.

I'd want it to be also very simple and easy to use, reliable, etc. I might want to do a bit of media streaming, but this is very much a 'would like' - the retro gaming is my main focus.

When I google this topic I get a flood of info, but not anything that points me to a well-recommended machine.
Does anyone have such a beastie that they would like to recommend?

Get yourself a Raspberry Pi. Super simple and easy to use and will hook to your tv via HDMi. You can get one fore about $50.

OK. Is there a particular vendor or seller you would recommend?

With the Rasberry PI kits, are they hard to put together? Any particular skills needed?

I actually just sent my Colecovision Flashback to an Atari Age member who performs a service where he upgrades it by replacing the insides with a Raspberry Pi. When you get the system back, it has all the games that were originally on the Flashback, and of course you can add your own roms and other emulators if you want.

One nice thing about it is that it still has two (upgraded) 9-pin controller ports which allow you to use controllers for the original Colecovision, CV Flashback, Atari 2600, 7800, Intellivision, INTV Flashback, and just about any other controller that uses a 9-pin connector. You can even use the Steering Wheel expansion and Roller Controller!

I think he also offers the same service for the Intellivision Flashback.
