RIP Chris Cornell

Postby Retrology » May 18th, 2017, 2:10 pm

I can't believe this. Soundgarden's one of my favorite bands, and Cornell one of my favorite vocalists and lyricists. I'm devastated.

Awful news. I hope his bandmates can finish this last album and give him a proper send-off.

I always thought his song You Know My Name for Casino Royale was the best James Bond movie theme. Sad.

Guess it's time to stick a fork in Soundgarden then. Hard to replace what made the band. It's like Taime Downe in Faster Pussycat. You just can't replace him.

I'm devastated. When I woke up and seen the news I didn't feel much of anything, but it started sinking in over the course of the day and now I'm just sitting here playing all the CDs and trying to make sense of it all. I bought Superunknown when I was 12 years old after hearing "Spoonman" and I still think it's the best rock album from that scene and time (although now I probably listen to Badmotorfinger and Down on the Upside more now - I kind of wore the album out). He was first rock singer whose voice made a real impression on me. He could write in different guitar tunings and time signatures and make it sound like the most natural thing in the world (although Soundgarden was a band in the truest sense - all four of them wrote music and lyrics). It's troubling to go back through the songs now and realize how many of them dealt with depression, sadness, hopelessness and death in general - I always figured it was an act of catharsis to write them, but it must have never provided the relief he sought. I hope his family, friends and bandmates are eventually able to find some solace from this tragic, senseless act and that Chris is in a better place.

This is such a shame, and he went in horrible way. I read an article last night from a music critic that was at his last concert photographing him. Said that chris was happy and energetic on stage.

Chris Cornell was not only a fantastic vocalist- he was a killer songwriter as well. He wrote most of the songs for Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog. Superunknown in particular is one of the greatest albums of all time. I can't believe he took his own life. Prayers to his loved ones. Rest in Peace, Chris. May you find peace in that eternal sunshower.

I saw Soundgarden twice. Once at Brixton academy. The album was Down on the upside so that would have been the tour. It was good.
In 2010 I saw them at Hyde Park the day from hell. It was so wet Everwhere you walked you sank into the ground. It did not matter Soundgarden came on and played a great set. I still have my t-shirt from the event.

I have been a fan of CC for years. This saddens me greatly.

RIP Chris you will be missed. I was hoping for a UK tour.

Sometimes I would watch MTV before school back when they actually played music videos. Black Hole Sun was pretty weird and pretty good. Still remember it to this day. Heart Shaped box by Nirvana and Sober by Tool along with Black Hole Sun are probably the 3 music videos I remember most from those years. I guess that makes them my favorites since I remember them the most. I don't remember thinking of them as favorites of mine, more just really weird, but whatever were my favorites I can't remember so I'll just claim them now as favorites.

This is terrible and I'm very sad about it. I'm a big fan. I felt like Chris Cornell was great in every project he did. I thought that he had longevity in a genre that most people are over the hill by their late 20's. No one rights good songs later than that really, and he did it. Obviously Soundgarden is amazing. But I think his work as a solo artist (including the amazing Bond theme) and with Audioslave was so impressive because he was doing it in his late 30's and 40's.
