According to a guy on AtariAge
http://atariage.com/forums/topic/266460-not-sure-where-to-drop-this-ataribox/page-2
this has nothing to do with Atgames, cartridges, or legacy consoles of any kind.
If so, its licensed the Atari name and logo to create something new, not retro. Which sounds very Ouya.

That's a site designed as a marketing gimmick. They want us to ask what it is to create buzz. It also requires jscript, so I probably just ate through 3MB of bandwidth just to see an email list sign up form. >_<
I signed up for the list btw. Also ate through more bandwidth by watching a rather fake (all cgi) non-informative trailer. >_<

A link to an article about this made Yahoo's front page. Amazingly they make it last 394 words. One interesting tidbit: you can email Atari's owners and ask to become a developer. I wonder if anyone could get info that way...

Re: Atari Box?
I found another article. Between this and the Retron 77 could we be getting an Atari 2600 console war??

Re: Atari Box?
From everything I have heard, its a completely new console developed from a third party company using the Atari name. Who knows? Hope its something cool and not just a marketing gimmick for something stupid

Ataribox: New Game Console
It was already announced in june, but I somehow missed it (and I haven't seen a topic on this forums): the Ataribox, a new 'game console based on PC technology' from Atari. What do you guys think it is? My guess it's some kind of streaming device, in the line of Steam or Ouya.
mod edit: We do have a thread already, using "Atari Box" instead of "Ataribox", so the post was moved there.

Re: Atari Box?
Saw some photos online, here is one. I assume the top row of USB ports in the back are for joysticks. Supposedly it will play classic as well as new games, as SD card, HDMI out.

Saw that picture in my inbox this morning. (Yeah, in spite of my skepticism I signed up for their email list.) Ugly. Nice to know it has an SD card slot tho. Hopefully it will let users side-load Game Programs (TM.)

Re: Atari Box?
Got the official email update about this today. Looks really cool, but I am worried its just going to be another Steam Box. Hopefully they put some effort in to this, and it is something really cool. Hope that it takes some sort of physical media, as Atari game boxes were always the best to look at.
