Crash Bandicoot Remaster Problem

I find it interesting that with all our technology they somehow screwed up the jump control in the Crash Bandicoot remaster. I could see how that might be frustrating. I mean, the game was tough enough!

Remember, Naughty Dog spent a lot of time fine-tuning the original game, going through the levels polygon by polygon to make sure it was action-packed without overwhelming the PS1's processor. The current developers recreated the geometry in a modern engine. I still can't fault the new developer; they had to make 3 games at once.

Pretty good watch. Which is the lesser of two evils- different control schemes for each of the games, to match the level design that was designed around each games unique physics (alienates new players, makes it difficult to go from 1 Crash game to another) or match Crash 3's physics for each title and then change the levels around each of the physics (ruins purist expectations). Crash 1 is the biggest issue since the momentum based gameplay of Crash 3 doesn't work the stop and go platforming of the original.

Gamasutra has an article on this. Quote:

"the team reportedly studied the original games in detail, then built prototype versions and did video comparisons between the prototypes and the older versions to check things like the timing of jumps and falls. "

"'We spent a lot of time studying the three titles and chose the handling from Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped as our Trilogy’s starting point; it represented the most improved and modern approach as it gives players the most control.'"

They suggest starting with the 2nd or 3rd game if you're a new player. Problem is, changing the controls creates a lot of cheap hits in the 1st game, which may have hurt reviews, and may even have hurt the originals' legacy:

If this slight inequity ruins the original games it's because people want to be walked through everything now.

I saw this issue a mile away when the game was announced, thankfully that's the only hiccup with using a new engine.
