Good review. I’ve only played Pengo in the arcades (last time was about 4 months ago) and it’s a game that should be fun but it’s more meh. And lining up the diamond blocks is just not worth it. Should be more to the game.

The track-ball mention made me think of something. Have you ever tried the track-ball with Realsports Tennis?
It supports it according to the box, but I've never given it a try. It might transform what's otherwise a pretty poor 5200 game with the stock controller.

Pengo is a risk-reward game when deciding if you are going for the time bonus instead of the 10k bonus with the diamond blocks, much of the time you're likely to get more points with the diamond blocks. No traction in the arcade?

I played the 8-bit version quite a bit, which looks to be the same game but with reworked controller input.
I thought it was a great game; I'm a bit surprised by the low grade.

Doesn't save it I'm afraid, it just replaces the joystick. You still have to aim with the numerical keys, which is the fatal flaw with it.
It's more playable since it's easier in my opinion to use the keypad on the track-ball controller during gameplay than on the joystick, but I was hoping the keypad was eliminated when using it.
