Love how Downhill's trees look like little explosions. Still need to read the review.

Thanks - never heard of these games before. I have an XEGS, but no floppy drive. But still, always interesting to learn and read about games like this.

I passed up the chance to buy an Atari 800 a year or two ago, for $25, that worked perfectly. I decided that, even at the great price, I didn't have room and would never use it. Still kick myself a bit for that.

A general question about the XEGS. Can this be purchased whole or does it require piece by piece building as it is essentially a mini computer? I’d luv to have my C64 back with everything but that’s an expensive proposition.

The Atari XEGS is a standalone machine that plays cartridges. It's backward-compatible with most of the Atari 8-bit computer library (Atari 800). It comes with a keyboard. I just did a quick check and was surprised to see these going for over $100. They used to be pretty cheap. A lot of those games came on floppy disk, and adding a 1050 disk drive is another expense.

I have a lot more Atari XE reviews in the pipeline by the way.

Fabulous, thanks for sharing this review. Please review rescue on Fractulous. One of my fave games on the 800xl and on cartridge. it is like a 3d defender.

He did review Rescue on Fractalous for the Atari 5200: http://videogamecritic.com/5200mr.htm#rev542

Is the XE version much different? The 5200 was based on Atari's 8-bit computers too.

Sorry the 5200 was never released in the UK. I was so desperate for one back in 1983. It never came out. Though I guess you are right and it is price prohibitive at the present time to buy it. Will check out the 5200 version and just watch it jealously on you tube.

I'm sorry; I would've been disappointed too. The XEGS sounds like a better setup than the 5200 anyways.
