Retro Game Challenge...representing the best of yesterday's worst?

Postby BanjoPickles1 » January 30th, 2009, 3:00 am

I just saw the trailer for this game an hour ago. You don't know how badly I want to be excited for this game but there's a feeling that I can't shake and maybe I'm not alone. While admittedly a cool concept, the games themselves look like clones of D-level nes games. If my fears come true, why would I want to play clones of bad nes games when I can still play good nes games, on my top loader and VC? Here's my five-second preview review:

First game: an unexciting-looking shooter. Nothing particularly of note.

Second game: a wretched-looking Action 52-style platformer.

Third game: the highlight. A racing game rooted in the Micro Machines mold.

Fourth game: an rpg that looks like a very lame Dragon Warrior 1 clone.

Fifth game: are they ripping off Astanax?! Why??

Does anybody have any information beyond this trailer? I wanted to be excited for this game so badly but so far, all I see are lesser versions of games that I can already pull off my own shelf...in mini-game form.

I went to Barnes and Noble today to check out Game Informer.  They gave the game an 8.5.  It's been years since I've read a GI so I'm not sure if that's a great grade or a bust.  Either way it's got one heck of an interesting premise.
