Super Mario Kart Questions

Postby nesfan1 » March 12th, 2009, 7:39 pm

I just borrowed SMK from a friend yesterday. It's great and all but there is some stuff that I don't understand.
1. Do the coins do anything?
2. When I play it Bowser will throw fireballs, Yoshi will throw eggs, and I don't seem to have a special move. Is the player able to use a special move?
3. When I get the feather power-up, all it does is make me jump. Is there a purpose for it?

Super Mario Kart Questions

Great to hear you're enjoying the original Super Mario Kart game.  While I wait for Nintendo to finally get that game up on the Wii Virtual Console, I shall answer your questions about this fantastic title:

1. The coins are used to speed your character up a bit.  The maximum number that you can collect are 10, at least in the sense that they'll increase your speed (if you collect more than 10, your speed will not increase past the boost that 10 coins give you).

2. This part always annoyed me (in a good way).  Sadly, there are not special items for human players, meaning that Bowser's fireballs, Yoshi's eggs and Toad/Peach's shrinking mushrooms cannot be found or used by human players (you can get the invincibility that Mario/Luigi use via the Stars and Donkey Kong Jr's banana peels via the item boxes, however).

3. The feather is a jumping item that appears only in the grand prix (1 or 2 players) the match race and battle modes (each for 2 players only).  As you stated, the item does make you jump much higher than a traditional hop.

The main reasons you'd want to do this is to take shortcuts (Ghost Valley 1, for example, has a ledge after the last jump over the hole that you can only reliably reach with the feather), avoid enemy shell shots or items on the ground, reach the item boxes in the shallow water pools in Battle Course 2 (that's the only way to get in them) or go off course in walled off, holeless courses (it may not be practical, but you can show off to friends saying something like, "Hey, I can get Lakitu to pick me up on Choco Island 2! Bet you didn't know you could do that!").
