What are your top ten favorite GAMES of all time???

Postby JWK1 » June 18th, 2010, 10:30 pm

What up, my classic gamers??  I want a list from each of you on your ten favorite games of all time.  I want the game (duh) and the system.  I'm looking to purchase some classic games and the internet hasn't been helpful.  Since many of us think alike I want YOUR recommendations based off your favorite games.  Here's mine:

10. Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA)
9. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow (GBA)/ Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS) TIE!!!!
8. Legend of Zelda (NES)
7. Ms. Pacman (Arcade)
6. Mega Man 2 (NES)
5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Arcade)
4. Mario Kart (N64, DS, SNES - in that order)
3. Halo (XBox)
2. Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
1. Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

Let the games begin.  Let's hear your ten favorites and let's get this thing started!

In no real order I had to do a top 10 per system:

SNES:
Mario World
E.V.O.
Mario Kart
Final Fantasy 2
Final Fantasy 3
Secret of Mana
Super Metroid
Star Fox
King Arthurs World
Zelda

NES:
Mario 3
Metroid
Zelda
River City Ransom
Double Dragon
Mike Tyson
Final Fantasy
Rc Pro Am
Clash at Demonhead

I'm working on a Coleco one and GB/GBA/DS one but it's taking me to long.

10. Shadow of the Colossus (PS2)

9.  Super Mario World (SNES)

8.  Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX)

7.  Metal Gear Solid (PSX)

6.  BioShock (Xbox 360)

5.  NiGHTS into Dreams (SAT)

4.  Final Fantasy VII (PSX)

3.  Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX originally; PSP preferred thanks to improved translation)

2.  Panzer Dragoon Saga (SAT)

1.  Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)

My back 3 are flexible and games could rotate in and out (including some I probably forgot), but the other 7 are pretty set.  For most people, their list centers on the peak gaming period of their life, and you can probably see that the 32-bit era was tops for me.

**Sometimes it feels weird listing an old sports game as my all-time favorite... but every time I try to think of what game belongs there, I always come back to TSB.  I've never consistently had more fun with a game throughout my life; and to this day I can pop in it and play for hours, especially against a worthy opponent.  Easily the best sports game ever made, and one of the few that holds up well so many years later.  **Panzer Dragoon Saga is the prize of my collection and well worth every penny of the $200 it often goes for.  Really a must-play game for big RPG fans.  My theory: you spend $60 a pop on average new games that you play for a couple weeks and then forget forever... so why not pay the price of 3 average games to get one all-time classic that you will never forget?  And you can always re-sell it to get the $200 back afterwards... hey, it's practically like renting.  But no one ever takes my advice.... oh well.  **As for Final Fantasy Tactics, I am a huge fan of games with great stories (hence why I enjoy RPGs) and, in my opinion, no game storyline has ever come close to as good as Final Fantasy Tactics. (I've heard that Xenogears is a worthy challenger, but I haven't gotten around to playing my copy).  I recently re-played FFT following its release on PSP, and the game and story was just as great the second time around.

@N64Dude

I'm surprised to see Yoshis Island DS on your list. Don't get me wrong; I really liked the game, but I liked the 1995 Snes version much more. Also, a big friggin' kudos to putting Mario Kart 64. I don't know why but even fans of the series don't like the N64 version. But any time my friends and I were bored in high school, this game came out and we'd be battling at Block Fort for the next couple of hours, or until girls came over.

By the way, I'm looking into getting vectorman. Ill tell ya what I think.

To keep things going, here's the rest of my top 20:

20. Super Castlevania IV (Snes)

19. Mike Tyson's Punch Out (Nes)

18. Devil May Cry (PS2)

17. Castlevania III (Nes)

16. Load Runner (Atari, Apple IIe)

15. Mega Man 3 (Nes)

14. Contra III (Snes)

13. Super Metroid (Snes)

12. Mega Man X (Snes)

11. Super Mario World (Snes)
Keep it coming guys! Great lists so far

@Pixel

Awesome lists, but I gotta push you to complete the GBC, GBA, and DS lists.  I really want to see your picks, especially for the GBA.  As more time passes I honestly think the GBA is even a better handheld than the DS.  I might be wrong.  But if you include backwards capability, the DS Lite includes both.  Anyway, let's hear some more games.
