I would like to recommend yet again that you take Just Cause 2 out for a spin while it's still nominally 'summer'-ish. I can't speak for the Xbox version since I play on Steam/PC, but I've never had any crashes or slowdown issues so it sounds like it's all the mindless and destructive fun of Just Cause 3 but without the annoying bugs, glitches, and online requirement.

At least I didn't pay the full price when this first came out, but I would rate this game D+ instead of C, because I HATE the choppy framerate when action heats up. Also, I sold my own copy of this game away after when I was done playing it, mainly because I was disappointed that this didn't live up to Just Cause 2.

Hard to review given all of the gameplay issues and even crashes? I'd say you did superbly, especially as other reviews I checked (such as the Ars Technica one) also indicated the same sort of technical troubles. I'd especially like to thank you for your honesty in mentioning such troubles, and to affirm that you are far from alone in regarding things like online requirements (in a SINGLE PLAYER game!) as total b.s., and crashes of any sort in a console game as unacceptable. As with other reviews of yours, you've saved me some money here :)

On a related note, and to second what was said above, I really do recommend checking out the first two games in the series on the 360, as they are truly enjoyable technical masterpieces and quite fun. Just Cause 2 is by far the better of the two, and I would rate it a 9/10 simply on the amazing draw distances and other technical marvels the developers accomplished in it. The grappling hook in 2 and parachute is also something truly fun, and likely more reliable than in 3 due to its simplicity. Achievements in both are also fairly fun, and I often found myself obtaining an Achievement after wondering if a particular stunt would unlock one. Ample challenge for hardcore gamers is also present, particularly in the final few levels of the story in the first game, and in liberating some of the last military bases (they're among the most difficult I've ever encountered). I've completed (all Achievements) and enjoyed both, and believe you will, too.

As a side note, it is also worth obtaining a copy of the first game in the series on the original Xbox and PS2, simply to play a full-fledged open world sandbox game developed at the height of those two systems' prominence, and when developers had learned to harness their full capabilities. Though they're among the more uncommon games for those systems, they are readily available online, and along with the 360 versions of 1 and 2 would make for an excellent Just Cause review series.

Red Clash,
Thanks for the thoughtful feedback. When you mentioned how other sites overlook some blatant issues it got me thinking. I'm reviewing a real copy of the game, but maybe these other sites are reviewing copies provided by the publisher?

I was just reading a review of the new King of Fighters in Game Informer magazine and they mentioned how it had the obligatory "arcade" mode. Ummm... no it doesn't! Are they even playing the same game?

I think getting early access also causes sites/magazines to overlook certain shortcomings and wrongly assume they will be addressed in the shipped version. Anybody else get that impression??

Anyway, I will consider reviewing Just Cause 1/2, although I suspect they may be out of season right now.

Yeah that is the problem with the xbone. It always has to be online. If it is not online it does not work properly. I do love it as a games system but it has real problems sometimes. Not sure how they play it in rural areas.
I have to say I was not inclined to buy this as it looked to over the top. It is good that you have reviewed it pointing out the frame rate issues that really ruined silent hill downpour are in this game.
I feel that alot of the problems with the 1 is that alot of the processing is done in the cloud. It also saves to the cloud as far as I am aware and that brings its own problems.

Good review.

I played the hell out of Just Cause 2. I had that at almost 98% complete at one time, and then lost all my saves. Thats a shame about JC3, but its pretty much the norm now to dish out buggy garbage

Nice review. I've been thinking of picking up one of the first two as I've heard they're a lot of fun. Thanks for the review, sad to hear this one is pretty buggy.

Is the just cause series like uncharted? I have a ps3, so I would get just cause 2. I assume they are somewhat similar, both being third person shooters. I would think just cause might have a more cheesy, over-the top action compared to uncharted.

Uncharted is tomb raider.
Just cause is basically gta.
