Re: Favorite Game Over Screens

Chrono Trigger - Losing to Lavos Final Fantasy VI - The melancholy music with the character kneeling down Symphony of the Night - "Let us go out the evening for pleasure". The gameover screens of the GBA/DS Iga-vanias are also worth a look. https://castlevaniadungeon.net/Images/Foreign/Sot...

Re: Games with sections that almost ruin it

Battlekid (NES homebrew) - This game is old enough that it can be discussed canonically with commercial NES games. At some point in the game you get an upgrade that removes the underwater breath timer. And to make it necessary, there's a long, pointless section of going through a narrow passage wher...

Re: Looks like Google Stadia and Atari VCS is in trouble for smaller devs!

Atari is not "returning after a long hiatus;" Atari Corp shut down in the mid-90's, when they sold to JTS. JTS kept two of Atari's old employees to provide rudimentary, SEC-mandated support for Atari's old customers. Which is why I don't understand how the VCS indie-go-go got 3M+ from ove...

Re: What-if scenario for Atari 2600 Pac-Man

Arcade games being “superior” to their console counterparts is a cool element to video game history. Remember the fun of seeing how “close” a console game came to the real/arcade version? If they had perfected it right out of the gate, all that fun would have been lost. Video games were slightly mo...

Re: Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Yarp. That project is probably the most cited one I hear referenced when I hear people say they lost faith in Kickstarter. Between this, MN9 and Yooka-Laylee, Bloodstained might be the first crowd-funded project by a rockstar creator sticking it to his former company that's been a critical success ...

Did they pass on the savings? To some extent, maybe.

Nintendo was continually panned for using carts with N64 because the games were typically $10-20 more than a PS1 title.

Re: Anyone else totally underwhelmed by Cuphead?

Disagree, though I could understand disliking the game's format for simply lacking content. You can restart the boss right after dying and there's no worry about a gameover. Also, the weapons are balanced enough that they make more sense to use on certain bosses. You have to juggle aiming and dodgin...

Re: Super Mario World vs Donkey Kong Country

They're both great games but I just prefer the basic gameplay of SMW. Plus the non-linearity gives it more of an adventuring feel.

DKC2 vs. Yoshi's Island would be a tougher call. There's no real tie-breaking quality in either game, except DKC2 might be more fun to casually rip through.

Re: Atari VCS is a scam!

A Linux box with built-in old licensed games and tacky, "nostalgia" motif isn't a scam. Trying to pass it off as a proper console is.
