Re: Very hard games that were intended for young children

The original The Smurfs on the Sega MegaDrive/Genesis was pretty hard too, too hard for children in my opinion... I didn't think that one was so bad, but Smurfs 2 was quite difficult. More than anything, it was a hassle to play, and would be pretty tricky for a younger kid to figure out. Heck, it w...

Re: Very hard games that were intended for young children

There was a really good article a few days ago on Kotaku, I think, about how Sega tried to get more girls involved in gaming in the early Genesis days. Just found it -- it's on Polygon: https://www.polygon.com/features/2019/5/27/18526122/sega-girls-task-force-female-players Speaking of the Genesis ...

Re: In Praise of Short Games

Now that I think of it, I'm surprised the Critic has never reviewed a version of Shadow of the Beast, though I don't expect him to like it much. The Genesis port gets a lot of guff for running faster than intended (a 60Hz vs 50Hz issue) but I found it completely playable and even addictive. I'd exp...

Re: In Praise of Short Games

As I've gotten older I've discovered a real fondness for short but difficult games like Pitfall! or Shadow of the Beast, or the higher levels of certain puzzle games like Tetris and Dr. Mario -- in short, games that can theoretically be completed in 10-15 minutes without glitches. You can make a bun...

Re: River Raid (Intellivision)

It's true that River Raid is a fairly uncommon game on the Intellivision and commands a higher price than most of the other Activision games (I don't remember whether it or Worm Whomper costs more these days). Glad you're having fun with it and looking forward as always to more Intellivision coverag...

Re: Sega CD or 32 X?

The Sega of America strategy for the Sega CD pushed FMV pretty hard, and that seems to be its legacy -- but if the Japanese library for the Sega CD/Mega CD had been localized (or fan-translated) into English, it would really change this equation. There are tons of RPGs and other interesting titles t...

Re: 2019/5/18: NES: Barker Bill's Trick Shooting, Desert Commander

Awesome -- I love seeing reviews for strategy/war games like Desert Commander. I've never really played it myself but have always been intrigued by it ever since seeing it in Nintendo Power. It's also got an interesting backstory since, from what I understand, the original Japanese version makes it ...

Re: 2019/5/15: Turbografx-16: Talespin

Always psyched to see more TG-16 reviews! (The Genesis game looks more polished than the Turbografx one, and its jungle stage is probably more "beautiful", but the overall style is much less distinctive and charming.) It (the Genesis game) also plays rather terribly -- quite a joyless game.

Re: Classic Compilation Icon

When I read the subject and the first post, I imagined the icon would be some kind of mash-up of Pac-Man and a recycling symbol -- a bit like this, but far more compact:

VideoGameCritic wrote:New Dreamcast reviews! Space Channel 5 is a re-review (adjusted grade from B+ to B) and Who Wants to Beat Up a Millionaire (ugh) is new. Feedback welcome!

A game that offers a handful of trivia questions, a few moments of wailing on some random person...and that's it? Sounds like a blast!
