Re: 2019/11/6: 3DO: Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller

So you ignored everything except for the most basic visual tropes. Let's go over it one more time. Blade Runner is using a bioengineered metaphor for machine people. Their brains are carefully designed to fail at empathy, much like a computer AI, and you can test them the same way you can test any o...

Re: 2019/11/6: 3DO: Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller

Thank you for the correction about the nature of the replicants. I've seen too many things inspired by Blade Runner, and had to go back and watch the real thing. With that said, simply dismissing bioengineered humans designed as a machine metaphor is handwaving the point away. (How many Blade Runner...

Re: 2019/11/6: 3DO: Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller

That's a fair point, but isn't computer technology what makes those androids possible? And you can't get the clear multimedia experience of those cities without some computers behind the scenes. Sure, Blade Runner failed to anticipate how radically computers would change our lives, but everything el...

Re: 2019/11/6: 3DO: Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller

As a Blade Runner super-nerd myself, I get annoyed whenever people call it cyberpunk. Cyberpunk copied the smoggy visuals, but there's nothing "cyber" about the movie. Deckard is introduced reading the newspaper! I'd count it. "Cyber-" is more than just cyborg enhancement and th...

Re: Book Review: Video Games in The Netherlands

So, all I knew about the Dutch were that they were very, very tall. And that, if rants from a frustrated Dutch friend could be believed, they're very practical minded and not worthy of a larger entry in the Hitchhiker's Guide. ("Mostly harmless.") Kind of like 21st century Hobbits, but dis...

Re: Looks like the Switch port of Samurai Shodown is going to be a fantastic port.

Because Samurai Showdown usually features just two pretty undemanding characters at a time? And there's a close-up camera that keeps the background geometry reasonable?

Pretty sure Bloodstained would run great too, if the developers who got hired for the Switch port only had to deal with that much.

Re: 2019/11/2: NES: Gargoyle's Quest II, Touchdown Fever

I wish I could argue with these reviews. I've never wanted to a love a game more, that bored me more than Gargoyle's Quest II. If you're giving everyone the chance to play a Ghouls N' Ghosts villain known for being difficult to hit, and he has all of these fun powers that would allow him to explore ...

Re: Later levels/bosses harder than final bosses?

The last boss of the Parodius games was always the easiest part of the game, and a reward for making it that far. Whether it's an easy target practically served to you on a platter, or the sudden overdue karma your own greedy octopus boss deserves, they were all memorable in their own way.

Re: 2019/10/29: Nintendo Switch: Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

So, based on what I've read so far, when faced with something as controversial as Bloodstained on the Switch, you should try to see why some gamers gave it a different review than you would have, and not spam your own hate for it all over the internet. And certainly not review bomb the audience scor...

Re: Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees?

Pinhead. The cenobites remind me of my first serious girlfriend, and I still believe that one day they'll appear in a sequel that's only painful to watch in a good way. Besides, Michael? Jason? They're both the same thing. Either one's only a reverse MacGuffin which hunts the other characters in the...
