Re: Games That Need Sequels/Reboots/Remakes Thread 2: Electric Boogaloo

I would buy a 3D, open-world H.E.R.O. that let me fly all over a giant cave system with a heli-pack and a laser gun.

Also, with Star Fox run as badly into the ground as it's been, it's about time we had a Space Harrier comeback. Imagine what that would be like on the Oculus!

Re: New Castlevania Banner

"What is a man?" SotN is in my all-time Top 10, and yet that line didn't catch my attention at all back when I played it in the mid-2000s. I only recently learned that it had become a meme. I don't think it's that weird of a line though, especially compared to all the other bad translatio...

Re: Your Favorite Video Game Soundtracks?

the ST's AY chip That's in the Spectrum. The ST has Yamaha's YM-branded version. Regardless of name, I've never liked the ST's sound; it's so incongruous coming out of a 16-bit system, and even in an 8-bit system like the Spectrum, the chip's tones sound cheap and tacky to me next to those of the S...

Re: The Best Console.

Really hard to argue against the PS2 for best overall. For best hardware, the 3DO. Tragically ahead of its time - if The Need for Speed is any indication, it was on the level of the PlayStation half a generation earlier. (OK, a year and a half earlier. But a huge year and a half!) Everything else ab...

Re: Games everyone loves, but you don't see them as great.

Portal . Wastes a brilliantly puzzle-oriented mechanic on level designs that are way, way too straightforward for it. The thing feels like a tutorial until the last few stages, and then it's over, and it's barely been two hours since you started! And what could have been its saving grace, its weird...

Re: Old game magazines

Amiga Power was the only real magazine. Brilliantly written and a complete stranger to BS (which eventually led to a moronic, one-sided "feud" with a certain major developer who stopped sending review copies when one of their games didn't get a high enough score). Very, very British, thou...

Re: Is E.T. on Atari 2600 really that bad?

I don't think that anyone genuinely believes that it's "the worst game ever"; it's just a convenient shorthand for an intersection of low quality and high exposure. It's like Plan 9 from Outer Space or the Ford Pinto - a turd that everyone happens to know about. If you asked someone, "...

Re: Happy 20th Birthday to the N64

Had and still have one. It has some fantastic games, but the actual hardware is so stupid - maybe it can draw more polygons than the PlayStation, but the texture memory is a joke (and the expansion pack doesn't make stock-hardware games any less blurry), and the cartridge medium severely hobbles the...

Re: Alice in Chains

The "tripod" album is my favorite. Dirt and Jar of Flies are good, but for reasons that keep them from reaching the same level - they're way too lucid and alive. Afterward is when things get awful in a way that's genuinely frightening to hear.

Re: Top 10 Halloween Games?

Beyond the Forbidden Forest on the C64 has some of the creepiest, Halloweeniest atmosphere ever. The graphics are cruddy even for the system, but they're cruddy in a way that actually makes them more unsettling than "better" graphics would be. Here's a playthrough. And here's a video of a...
