Re: 2019/8/7: Atari XEGS: Spy Vs. Spy, Spy Vs. Spy II: The Island Caper

I remember ogling magazine ads for these games back in the early- to mid-1980s. Never did get to play them on a computer, but later played the NES version of the first game, which was underwhelming. Apparently the sequel was ported too, but only in Japan. I must say there's something uncommonly nost...

Re: 2019/8/4: 3DO: Drug Wars

Yay! More 3DO reviews!

I haven't played Drug Wars but Crime Patrol is similarly opaque about the number of continues you have left, which is annoying.

What light gun did you use? I've been meaning to get one for my 3DO for ages now, but they tend to be a bit pricy...

Re: Did 3DO games ever come in shrink wrap?

I can confirm, having opened a few sealed 3DO titles myself (The Incredible Machine, Stellar 7, and a couple others).

Re: 2019/7/4: Atari XEGS: Frogger II: Threedeep!, Pitfall

I went and checked out the Atari 2600, 5200, Intellivision and ColecoVision versions before I posted, and yeah, they all start with 2000 points. I guess it's just one of those things you don't notice until you notice, so to speak. It took me 25 years to figure out that the balloon enemies in TMNT ha...

Re: 2019/7/4: Atari XEGS: Frogger II: Threedeep!, Pitfall

You never go underground in Pitfall? Jeez, that's the way to rack up the loot! I got a perfect score in the Intellivision version once, and you'd better believe I did a lot of climbing up and down those ladders and jumping over scorpions. :) As I recall it's pretty much confirmed that it's impossibl...

Re: 2019/6/30: Game Gear: Outrun Europa, The Lost World: Jurassic Park

I got very close to beating Outrun Europa five or six years ago, after a handful of attempts. It wasn't a very good game, though I don't think it was quite as horrible as all that either. I should get back to it sometime!

Re: 2013/12/22: NES: Home Alone, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York

Old thread, but I wonder if the concierge character in Home Alone 2 is meant to be Rob Schneider, not Tim Curry, in the face department. It's almost like they transplanted Schneider's head onto Curry's outfit. I've been playing these terrible THQ games lately and I think it'd do the Critic good to r...

Re: Should I buy an original Game Boy?

There were also some flicker effects that supposedly look best on the monochrome Game Boy's slow-responding screen. Can't remember what games were cited, though.

Re: Should I buy an original Game Boy?

Many portable screens have degraded over time in subtle ways, so you may not even be getting an accurate representation of what playing a Game Boy was like in 1989. (My memory is that the display was annoying to deal with, but also crisper than what most units look like nowadays.) On the other hand,...

Re: Merge Game Boy Reviews?

Oh, to be clear, I very much enjoy the VGC's portable reviews, and my post was in no way meant to discourage more! I've just always considered them as a pleasant surprise when they show up, if that makes sense. But I'd love to see more Game Boy and Game Boy Color reviews, and would particularly love...
