Re: 2017/10/13: Turbografx-16: Ghouls 'N Ghosts

Definitive home version might be a bit much. There were better than arcade perfect ports released for later home systems, and they don't limit your continues. But yeah, visually, it's hard to go back to the Genesis port after playing this one. It alone would have justified the purchase of the Superg...

It used the extra horsepower to minimize sprite flicker.

Really, nothing special if you're used to modern games. Most emulators, legal or otherwise, throw that feature in as a default.

But at the time? It was awfully considerate of the developers to include that option.

Re: 2017/10/7: Intellivision: Thunder Castle, Mystic Castle

Batman for the original Gameboy, and Kid Dracula, both feature bats as shields. But you'd feel disappointed if they weren't helping you out. Thunder Castle is the rare game where there's no thematic explanation for their sudden good nature. Anyways, good reviews all around, critic - it really is sur...

Other than the save feature, what makes this version least worst?

Is it just the graphics?

Re: Halloween Games?

How about Kid Dracula on the original Gameboy? It's essentially Castlevania done up in a cute Megaman style, which combines to really create a Halloween atmosphere.

I'd also recommend Super Mario Land 2, since one of the worlds is Halloween themed. But I'm not sure that's enough for this article?

Re: 2017/9/14: Playstation 4: Madden NFL 18

My favorite football game is still the Mattel handheld. Can team headshot sniper dots beat team inexpensive cat distraction? If we're talking anything that resembles an actual sport, it's Tecmo Super Bowl. But then again, the last football game I watched in its entirety was Flash Gordon vs. Ming's g...

Re: 2017/9/17: Xbox One: Final Fantasy XV

Is it really fair to rate a sandbox world by the narrative standards of a linear plot? The theme here is road trip, so the episodic, too many ideas and not enough clear resolution feel of it all, really feels right to me. And the high risk magic system feels like calling in an air strike. As for the...

Be fair. That's at least early PS2 quality. Look at all that texture smoothing and the excellent frame rate. Nobody's made out of visible triangles.

Re: Atari 2600 40th Anniversary

We couldn't afford an Atari 2600 when they were new. Or even when the NES launched. But by the end of the 80's, they were finally cheap enough for poor children to own them too. There's no feeling today that can match the alien sensation of watching an old television's analog snow fade away for a cr...

Re: Dogfighting games?

What you're doing now, is how you'd approach an early 3d arcade game. Dogfighting requires a bit more skill. The idea is to think of it as a dance. If you anticipate where your enemy is going, you can follow them all the way, or even cut them off. Also, if you have any kind of missiles, they're gene...
