Wow! Pilotwings a perfect 10? Yeah, I don't think so. Interesting.

I had to watch the clip for Umihara Kawase as I had never heard of it until now. It's like someone combined Bionic Commando as a platformer and added a cute motif to it minus the shooting. It seemed interesting.

I've always been amazed the AES had an audience at all. $650 for the console is enough of a barrier to entry, but the game carts went for $200... who was even playing this, corporate executives blowing off steam with some Fatal Fury?

This is frankly very unusual. This would be like comparing the Genesis to Capcom CP System hardware. I mean sure, you can do it, but they're two ENTIRELY different animals.

Funny enough...

If I only had one system to play, it'd be the SNES. If it was a question of buying one library when they were new? SNES.

But since we live in a world where we've got access to every other Nintendo console, and Neo Geo games are budget releases now? And since I prefer fighting games to platformers? I'll take the Neo Geo library any day.

It's not a system for everyone, but it never tried to be. And those of us who enjoyed the mid-90's arcade experience, appreciated what it brought to the table.

Wait, we agree on something? Just kidding. Great post. Any post that has “mid-90’s arcade experience” in it is a winner.

Neo Geo vs SNES. Case of a refined product vs mass produced one, quality over quantity, a novel candy product vs candy shop.

With choice and cost a factor the Neo Geo never stood a chance. This was of course an epoch where everyone and their granny wanted those LA Gear sneakers with those light up soles, or Reeboks with a pump on them.

Genesis and SNES promised arcade quality graphics, Neo Geo was the actual arcade in the home, less the cabinet and coin slots. But it did not have a blue hedgehog game leading it's lineup.

Game libraries, Neo Geo was streamlined quality, fewer titles but did more with it. Back then everyone liked Arcade titles, that was the buzzword of the day, RPG's at home?

Arcade should win .... in theory.

But then you swing back to that notion of a top 10 list - that is, desert island scenario, only 10 games, one console only, which one? Valid concept? Or bunk? Irrespective, hard to not consider the SNES here, provided that the process of you arriving on this island incurs memory loss of some sort.

SNES definitely has some classics doing the rounds on top gaming lists. Mario Kart? Hard to knock it's novelty value albeit old hat today. Super Mario World? It rode on the lofty sails of it's prequel. Then you get into platformers. Donkey Kong Country, legendary or gimmicky with it's silicon graphics / digitized sprites? How about Final Fantasy 6 or Chrono Trigger - titles that are always be propped up, brave soul as it is to claim the obvious - Emperor's new clothes less the cojones of a brat to proclaim it loudly. How about Earthbound, crap masquerading as genius, an underground masterpiece. Fighting games? Killer Instinct, second rate port fodder but oddly satisfying. Street Fighter 2, everyone's go to one on one, SNK could never pull it off. Then one delves into personality and eccentricity. Gunstar Heroes vs Metal Slug?

Naturally, picking through individual titles is meaningless. Subjective as always.

Picking top tens? We have a member here, Zach, who loves Atari Jaguar's Alien Vs Predator. If one could find a handful of other Jag titles, console might look rather good using a viewing window.

Neo Geo vs SNES? Obviously the Neo Geo wins, hands down.

SNES had a higher number of well known games to play but what does that mean? Why could that be relevant today? I guess it depends on personality type.

Then there is new experiences versus retreading old? 1000's of potential nuggets in the Dos/Amiga/Amstrad/home computer space, and of course Neo Geo. These are titles we missed out on. How badly do I want to play Link to the Past? Unless I get a lobotomy or suffer amnesia I could probably happily live the rest of my life never playing it again, that despite believing this to be one of the rare examples of an A+ masterpiece. Why would I want to go back and replay a SNES game? No thanks, I will pass, although there are exceptions, i.e. a remaster like Actraiser and so on.

Of course I am willing to accept the fatal flaw in my "new experiences" argument. It utterly dismisses nostalgia and sweeps aside gamers feelings of the time, dismissing with impunity a kid jumping up and down in excitement booting up Sonic or Mario for the first time, games by word of mouth doing the rounds in schools. That has always been part of the gaming experience. Not just playing, but talking about it.

Whatever the case X console vs Y console never works when they have vastly different libraries.

Although, we're comparing apples to oranges. The Neo Geo as you know was an arcade converted for home use. It's not like they made a lot of dedicated console games for the Neo Geo.

In an arcade game you're trying to get the customer to pop in another $0.25 about every 2 minutes. The value and mindset for the games are different. On a console you're trying for a different level of engagement. Making someone that spent $60 on a game die every 2 minutes and restart the game isn't all that appealing to the user. Hence, everyone is talking about the library and depth being far greater on the SNES & Genesis.

Hardware wise the Neo Geo blows them both out of the water. You're talking about a 24-bit system compared to a 16-bit system. However, game wise, I'll take the SNES any day.

What's interesting is that to this user, I personally would much rather have an arcade experience than a drawn out RPG or a game such as Zelda. One of the things that drove me bonkers on the SNES and especially on the NES is when arcade games were "ported" to the systems and the developers would try to find ways to 'extend' the game instead of doing a direct port of what made the game so fun in the arcade in the first place. Those ports felt watered down and dumb to me.

I never owned a NeoGeo at the time, I do have a NeoGeo mini now and it's fun.

I had an SNES at the time it was alive, and it is also fun.

Anytime I see folks wanting to know if system A is better than system B I always kinda chuckle. It's all up to what you want at any given time.

Who cares which is "better". Just enjoy them all I say. ;)

The SNES just wasn't as big of a giant leap forward in 2d technology from the NES that it should've been. I was playing computer games so it wasn't quite that disappointing for me. But once the PS1 came out and put my favorite computer game developers out of business there wasn't a choice, although that's for a different conversation. You can bring up specs or whatever, but it almost felt like an expansion pak or something for the NES. It totally would've ruined the early to mid 90's video game experience if I wasn't into computer games. And it seems like a disproportionately high percentage of people who like the SNES only like it because of RPG's or slow adventure games.

There were fast Arcade games on SNES (see Axelay), though it does help to remember that the home market the SNES was released into was already transitioning away from arcade-ports being the top sellers (note transitioning, the full shift from Arcade would not occur until the PSX/Dreamcast era). Also, I don't think MegaMan X or Super Metroid fall into "slow RPG" playstyles...

Also, for those that prefer their home releases of arcade games to be 1-to-1, I appreciate releases that add meat to the arcade gameplay without compromising the core game. One VERY good example of this was Virtua Fighter 32X, where extra modes and cheats were added to add replay value to the game, while not largely modifying the core game.
