Fatal Run for Atari 2600

Postby Anchoa79 » November 26th, 2023, 10:32 am

I just discovered that Fatal Run was also made for the Atari 2600 and was PAL only. Have you played this game? what did you think of it?

Anchoa, thanks for bringing this to my attention, for several reasons.

First, I was not aware of an Atari 2600 version, but in the past most of the PAL games have been translated to NTSC, allowing me to play and review them on my Harmony Cart. So if someone can provide me with the ROM or point me in the right direction I will check it out.

Also, I knew the name Fatal Run sounded familiar so I checked my Atari 7800 reviews and found a review there - dated August 7, 1999! That's right - it was from a whole century ago! I gave it a D but it's definitely overdue for a re-review. It's possible I could be more kind in retrospect. Stay tuned for that one.

The collection put out by ROM Hunter can be useful in this regard --

http://www.atarimania.com/rom_collectio ... _roms.html

Look for the subfolder marked "NTSC VERSIONS OF PAL ORIGINALS". It doesn't have fan-made PAL to NTSC conversions, but dumps of NTSC versions that actually date from the Atari 2600 release era, so you could have played these back in the day.

After checking the list for games you've already reviewed, I think the ones of interest to you (besides Fatal Run) would be:

Assault (AKA Sky Alien) (1983) (Bomb - Onbase) (CA281)
Bobby Is Going Home (1983) (Bit Corporation) (PG206)
Challenge (Zellers)
Dice Puzzle (1983) (Panda) (106)
End of the World, The (2600 Screen Search Console) (Jone Yuan Telephonic Enterprise Co)
Great Escape (AKA Asteroid Fire) (1983) (Bomb - Onbase) (CA282)
IQ 180 (2600 Screen Search Console) (Jone Yuan Telephonic Enterprise Co)
Lilly Adventure (Unknown)
Mission 3,000 A.D. (1983) (Bit Corporation) (PG207)
Nightmare (1983) (Sancho - Tang's Electronic Co.) (TEC004)
Pharaoh's Curse (Unknown)
Racing Car (Unknown)
Save Our Ship (Unknown)
Sea Monster (1982) (Bit Corporation) (PG201)
Snail Against Squirrel (1983) (Bit Corporation) (PG208)
Space Tunnel (1982) (Bit Corporation) (PG202)
Spider Maze (AKA Inca Gold) (1982) (K-Tel Vision)
Topy (2600 Screen Search Console) (Jone Yuan Telephonic Enterprise Co)
Wall-Defender (AKA Wall Break) (1983) (Bomb - Onbase) (CA285)
Z-Tack (AKA Base Attack) (1983) (Bomb - Onbase) (CA283)

Some of these were dumped from sketchy multicarts, but many are from games that were available in North American stores.

The releases on the Bomb label -- Assault, Great Escape, Wall-Defender and Z-Tack -- are in the latter category; the games are quite rare, but you could buy them at retail, I believe. The real cartridges are also infamous for breaking, so a ROM is the way to go!

There are also these --

Burning Desire (1982) (PlayAround - JHM) (202)
Cathouse Blues (1982) (PlayAround - JHM) (201)
Knight on the Town (1982) (PlayAround - JHM) (203)

-- which are pornographic games. (The gender-swapped versions are Jungle Fever, Gigolo, and Lady in Wading, respectively.)
