Yeah and around the same time, the Xbox One! Left the door wide open for the Playstation 4. And Sony never looked back!

What's really wild is how the richest companies with long histories and the highest paid executives are capable of such stunning incompetence!

It never really seemed to hurt them but the Wii is and was a terrible name.

Anyone want to come over and play with my Wii?

Anyone?

Anyone?

I mean, mention has to go to Sega Saturn for not only being totally killed by terrible business decisions, but by America-exclusive business decisions. The marketing and angle from which they approached the Saturn was a total 180 in Japan and even though Europe was Playstation country for the most part we still liked the system quite a bit.

The Turbografx-16 also deserves a similar mention as a console that was quite successful in Japan just absolutely bombing overseas through very little fault of the actual console itself. To this day I am ASTOUNDED at decisions like "hey, why bother bringing our port of Street Fighter 2 Champion Edition to the US? Nobody likes Street Fighter 2 over here, right?"

The Atari Jaguar.

Getting the title of “the first 64-bit system” by desperate technicalities alone?

A minimal at best game library that, for the most part, failed to push the system to its limits?

An absolute joke of a controller design with a barely touched but space consuming numeric pad?

I think Seanbaby said it best in his review of Fight For Life:

“There are so many video game systems that failed for subtle reasons like marketing or sunspots. That's not the case with the Jaguar. The Jaguar deserved to fail. In fact, the Jaguar didn't fail hard enough.”

I don't think anyone ever said that unless to make fun of the console, like you just did

In random order, these come to mind:
1 Wii U
2 Gizmondo
3 Commodore 64GS
4 Amiga CD32
5 Sega 32X
6 Bandai/Apple Pippin
7 Neo Geo CD
8 Nokia N-Gage
9 Amstrad GX4000
10 VM Labs Nuon
11 Google Stadia (not really a console)
12 Ouya

I think you have to throw Bally Astrocade on that list. Superior product but the distribution model for this product was atrocious.

It reminds me of how the music industry used to be from the 1950s-2000s where it was all about the label you signed with, the promotion the record company gave you, and... most importantly... how far and wide the label distributed your product.

Business decision alone the 32x. I think it's the poster child for this.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the 3DO, which had the worst business model of any console. Design a bunch of custom chips that you can't make, license them to electronics companies that can't recoup the fabrication costs with games, and launch at 700 bucks in 1993.
