Switch Online "N64 17+" App

Postby DaHeckIzDat » June 21st, 2024, 9:37 pm

For those who may not know, Switch Online let's you download classic Nintendo games from several of their older systems, one of them bring the N64. Well, they just released a wholly separate N64 app that's exclusively for their M rated games. Currently it only has Perfect Dark and Turok on there.

Honestly, this confuses the hell out of me. I get that family friendly Nintendo wants to separate the kid games and the adult games, but was creating a whole 'nother app really the easiest solution rathen than, say, adding a parental control option to filter out the M rated games? That's like if Netflix only let you watch R rated movies by downloading a second Netflix app called "Netflix R."

Personally, I think this works.

I have no interest in the M-rated games on the N64 (Turok, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day), so if I can avoid them by simply not downloading an app, great!

With Netflix, it has a focus on a general audience, so it makes sense to separate it to have a kids section. Nintendo has always been family oriented, so having a section specifically for mature audience works.
It's possible the ESRB has a hand in this tho so as to not gatekeep the majority of the games from said general audience. So long as kids stay away from M rated games and doesn't affect my enjoyment of said games, I'm golden. Parental locks are a thing.

Downloading things is about the most painless thing on the planet, so it’s no big deal.

I believe this was originally done due to the difference in which ratings work in Japan, but I could be mistaken. Either way, I guess they just felt like re-utilizing the Japanese system for oversea releases too.

Yeah, anytime Nintendo does something odd, my immediate response is to wonder if it’s a Japanese culture thing.
