Neo Geo AES+ Delayed a Year

Postby jon » September 9th, 2026, 1:49 pm

This is an absolute freaking disaster. I remember when they announced it I couldn’t believe they’d be able to have all those tens of thousands of cartridges.

Now it’s September 2027 they’re saying.

If it is any consolation, and I am sure it is not, I hear the Vertrex has a main chip problem. It is also delayed. It was supposed to be delivered Sept 2026, now they are talking about May 2027. That is a provisional date.

"An unexpected component change
Anyone who works with electronics will be familiar with this problem: components can suddenly become unavailable, reach the end of their production life, or be replaced by a newer revision. Unfortunately, this is exactly what has happened to us. The ESP32-P4 module at the heart of the Vectrex Mini motherboard has been discontinued in its current form while the manufacturer transitions to an updated version. We were informed that the replacement module will not be available before the end of October."

I'm actually just glad that FOR ONCE a company is going "YEAH IT AIN'T COMING ANY BLOODY TIME SOON" instead of saying "any minute now guys, just a tiny delay" 15 times.

It's a total component shortage. Don't expect it to get better anytime soon.

AI and Trump tariffs just skewering the pig from both ends yet again.

At this point it really seems like a scam. Granted, I got it on Amazon so I won’t give them a penny until it ships. But there’s tons of people who gave them money on their plaion site. A lot of them are going to want their money back,

Here are reasons why it seems like a scam:

1) they’ve yet to even show an AES+ working and booting up with a game in it.

2) they kind of lied when the rumors last month swirled that it was getting delayed and they denied it.

3) if costs of “components” are so high due to AI for instance, how is it possible they’re going to get that sorted out 10 months later?

This seems like it’s never going to happen. I kind of altered my plans and pushed back me getting a few AES cartridges on my own like KOF ‘95 or Fatal Fury Special because I though I was getting 5 games in 2 months and that there would be 20 more in the next 2 years.

I’d be shocked if this comes out next September or anytime ever. Of course when I first heard of this months ago my first thought was there’s no way it’ll happen.

It’s fascinating what’s going on. I’ve noticed some people think that these AI shortages are an excuse and that the Neo Geo doesn’t use any chips like that?

Then what’s the issue? Maybe they had trouble making the system?

At this point, with so many people cancelling their preorders there’s nothing left, it’s impossible to see this ever coming out.

People are contacting plaion and they’re getting refunds.

Edit: the thing that upsets me the most is this notion that it’s wrong or unfair to ship out as many units as they can, even it most people end up without one and unhappy.

Say there’s only 5,000 consoles produced and 100,000 orders. To establish any sort of trust you ship out what you have. So what if people scalp them at unrealistic prices and most of the people who ordered don’t get it yet.

It seems like they haven’t even produced any units yet, which is pretty alarming.

All I know is, when they finally ship this thing, there had better not be a "day zero patch" or anything like that. They've had enough time, it should work right out of the box.
