First Gaming Addiction?

Postby VideoGameCritic » March 15th, 2014, 2:05 pm

What was the first video game you remember being "addicted" to?

For me I think it was Missile Command.  Not only did me and my friends play it compulsively on the Atari 2600, but there was a Missile Command at the arcade in my bowling alley.  When I wasn't playing, I was watching other people play.  It's a mesmerizing game.  I don't think there's ever been another game quite like it!

For me I believe it was Sonic 2.

Space Invaders at Skateland.....being 8 or 9 years old and praying that the older teenagers playing it would respect gaming decorum (placing my quarter on the corner of the glass) and let me play when their game was done.  When I saw the Atari 2600 version - it cemented me as a gamer for life.

As a chubby kid, I didn't roller skate very well anyways......

Gorf in the arcade.  I used to play it a lot in an arcade in Glasgow.  It took me ages to work out how to use the fire button but when I did I was hooked.

Probably the very first Legend of Zelda. I took the plunge with the Colecovision, later on got a NES, tried out a few games.. came across Zelda at one of my cousin's.. Love at first sight.

Skool Daze on the ZX Spectrum, I'd rename all the characters with my own teachers and pupils with my friends. Sometimes I would just spend a day at the school and not even try with the objectives. True sandbox gaming before the term even existed.

There were many games I'd play long into the night, bathed in the glow of Atari laser death, and it was kind of like Christmas lights, for a kid who never had a color TV before.

But I wasn't really addicted until Ultima III. You had an entire world to explore. It finally answered my question as a child - what if you could drive off the road in Pole Position, and play an entire game where there were no tracks, no levels, and sometimes, even no enemies?

It was probably SimCity (original) on Mac... a couple of years later it happened again with SimCity 2000.

Smash 64 was my first gaming addiction. I started playing it with my friend Evan everyday after school for years... I had been gaming for a couple generations before that but I had never found a game that I could enjoy with another person until that time.
