2600 Keystone Kapers. How great!

Postby matmico399 » January 5th, 2016, 9:01 pm

I remember having an Atari 2600 growing up as a kid. I couldn't wait to open that 2600 I believe it was Christmas Morning of 1981. Combat came with it and my folks told my older Bro and I we could each ask Santa for one game each. He wanted Asteroids, I wanted Adventure. My older Bro knew Santa wasn't real but he never let on to me. At the same time most of the friends in our neighborhood got a 2600 as well. Flash forward to 1983 or 1984. My friend Brian was talking about how cool this new Activision game Keystone Kapers looked. It actually has moving escalators (something mind blowing back then)! Come January 2016. I have finally played KK, and this game is just excellent. I picked it up a few months back pretty cheap but I was still trying to conquer my 360 games (still trying). Wow I have played this basic game for over an hour now, and I still can't get enough trying to beat my high score. I have a few PS2 and 360 games I haven't even touched yet, but I can't put down KK. My other 2 fave games on the 2600 by Activision were Pitfall 2 and Ice Hockey. But for sure playability for a 2600 game, I can't think of a better game than this!!!!!

I have to agree that this is a timeless classic. And the visuals look so polished even today.
And I don't know why, but it's always a thrill to ride those escalators.
I wonder why Activision never produced a sequel?

I have the 2600 and the Atari 8 bit version. Both are great and I play them all the time. They haven't lost their appeal since I first played them years ago.

That's a very good question. I sometimes wonder the same thing.

One of my favorite games of all time! My father and I would go to tag sales when I was a kid, we picked it up for 25 cents, and it quickly became one of our favorite 2600 games. Activision was on point during that era, if you haven't picked up Kaboom and River Raid yet, get on it!

I use it in my Homebrew presentation (see slide #31) as an example of how to use the limited objects of the 2600 in order to generate the display. Most of the screen is created by changing the color of the background over successive scanlines.
