N64 Mini Classic

Postby scotland » July 21st, 2017, 8:37 am

We now have rumors that Nintendo is working on an N64 Mini Classic. This is based on patent filings for controller line art used as branding. At least it shows Nintendo is protecting that stylized controller logo.

I happen to be a fan of the N64, but I don't think the console - although newer - has the nostalgic fan base of the NES or SNES. Its early 3D polygons may not translate well to big HD flatscreens.

Nintendo's 1st party lineup often looks great when rendered at 480p on the Virtual Console, so I wouldn't dismiss the possibility.

The water in Wave Race still looks great, Paper Mario almost always looks top notch except when text font is shown enlarged to imply a character raising their voice, Super Mario 64 has a very clean look, etc. Amazing what the rendering resolution boost and bypassing the N64's blur filter can do for these games.

I don't know. I think that a N64 Classic would be a depressing reminder of Nintendo's transformation. It would have to consist solely of first party titles, since Rare is owned by MS, Goldeneye is too much of a mess to be bothered with, and there were few classic third-party titles released on the system that could be added to the library.

I also agree that there is a cutoff to nostalgia. Most of the games that would have to be included (Mario 64, Ocarina, Majora's, Starfox 64) have already seen remakes, are readily available on the VC, and they don't have a gimmick to tie it to, ala Starfox 2 (unless Mother 64 was further along in development than we knew).

Honestly, I would rather have a GameCube Classic which, for a moment, seemed to right the third party wrongs of the N64. You're talking about a system that could have:

1). Luigi's Mansion
2). Pikmin
3). Smash Bros. Melee
4). Viewtiful Joe
5). Soul Caliber 2
6). Fire Emblem
7). Resident Evil 4
8). Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes
9). Wind Waker
10). Mario Sunshine
11). Skies of Arcadia Legends
12). Super Monkey Ball
13). Metroid Prime
14). F Zero GX
15). Beyond Good and Evil
16). Sonic Adventure 2 Battle
17). Billy Hatcher
18). Wave Race
19). Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
20). Animal Crossing

GameCube, I felt, deserved far more fanfare than it received. Many of the games have aged beautifully, and still hold up! Had it actually sold, I think that they could have gained some more of the third party support that they had lost, and they could have found themselves back on track, in that regard.

They should release it with 4 controllers, Smash Bros, and Goldeneye, Mario Kart 64, and just call it the "Nintendo Party Machine" for $69. I'd buy it.

I agree whole heartedly with respect to the GC. A great system. The N64 was just a boring system to me. But all of the flashback type consoles have been cartridge based. When will we see these type of retro consoles that are based on systems that used disks. Time will tell. If they ever happen I bet a Saturn or Dreamcast would make big bucks!
