Would it be improper to review C64 games by playing them on this system?

Its not a great chance to experience these games if the controller is sloppy. All that does is misrepresent the games as poor games. Thats a fatal flaw.

Which answers Daves question - yes, it would be unfair to review a game on a sloppy controller.

It does have USB ports for controllers. You could use a different one.

I also saw that it can use a USB keyboard to access the built-in BASIC programming language, which is kind of cool.

The USB ports may be the saving throw, but you have to buy a keyboard and be able to remap keys to mimic the C64 keyboard, and buy a USB joystick or a USB to old 9 pin.

So, you get a keyboard to replace, and a a joystick to replace to add in to the cost.

If it works, this might be a good fit.

I've used several of their converters. They build nice quality products that get the job done well.

The C64 mini is available on Amazon for $80.

Key points are that its VICE emulation, and you can add your own games. The keyboard is just decorative, and there are complaints on the joystick.

I'm intrigued. I found a games list here:
https://thec64.com/games/

Has anybody tried this? Would it be faithful enough to allow me to review C64 games? Yeah I know I had a C64 Critic but his system has been in disrepair.

I noticed it says "no AC adapter" on the front. What does that mean??

I am planning on ordering one, but I don't have one yet.

I hear that its VICE emulation, so thats pretty good - but you can just run that on a PC too without dropping the money here.

I don't understand the AC adapter thing unless its a comment on the original adapter bricks.

The games list is about half Epyx games. Recall there was an Epyx C64 plug and play a decade ago. Some versions of that were actually moddable (both versions did become pricey, but I assume this product crashes those prices)

Its not an impressive set of games. You can load your own, but it sounds like they load as floppy disks at regular speed. Be prepared to enjoy a beverage while they load.

Floppy disks are FAST! It was those old tape-loading games that always killed me! 10 minutes and counting!
