Which games have the best screenshots?

Postby ThePixelatedGenocide » November 8th, 2018, 3:24 pm

Back in the day before the internet, that was often how many gamers made their purchasing decisions. Which ones tempted you? Which ones still tempt you?

Alien3 on the Genesis sold me on it's graphics and firepower.

NES Ninja Gaiden. I remember seeing the back of the box at the video rental store. It has images of cut scenes and the boss fight with the two dogs. I thought that it looked so cool and made me want to play. Needless to say I was not disappointed.

Great topic this was a big thing back in my ST gaming days US Gold were infamous of doing arcade ports with massive sprites and great graphics. Problem is when you got home and realised the frame rate was terrible, controls nerfed and everything was choppy.

Exhibit A: Final Fight

Looking at that shot on the back of a box and being a massive fan of the arcade game - wouldn’t you want it to ?

Exhibit B: Street Fighter 2

Now to be fair yes I was swayed by the screenshots but I loved this version. Until I played the Sega and SNES ports and realised it was a load of cack.

Edit: Typos (thanks auto correct- not).

Speaking of frame rates, Shadow of the Colossus looks infinitely better in still images than in m/o/t/i/o/n. :|

Genesis Sword of Sodan is another "bait and switch" game where the graphics on the back of the box look amazing, but not so impressive in action.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 for the SNES is a great example of the "bait and switch" Sut mentions.

I remember how cool Astrochase looked in the gaming magazines ads back in the early 80’s. Anyone who played it quickly learned that looks can be deceiving. Another great intro screen was Swordquest Earthworld. To bad that 99% of the effort went into making those intros.

Need for Speed on the 3DO had magazine screenshots which blew me away back in the day.
