Street Fighter II Intro changed

Postby VideoGameCritic » April 29th, 2019, 7:22 pm

So I was reviewing a Street Fighter Anniversary Edition on my PS4 with my friend Chris, who pointed out the intro was the original Japanese version with a black guy being punched out by a blonde dude. I was like what?! He said Capcom originally changed it due to racial overtones. I looked it up and he was right!

I would have never even noticed. I guess political correctness was around even back in the early 90s.

Even? That was when it became a buzzword in the first place.

A random guy randomly punching out a black guy wasn't a good look for Capcom back when Dhalsim looked like this:

And his Yoga fire came from spicy curry rather than psychic powers. He wore rags and skulls, originally, just because a bunch of dudes thought as far as "Wow, India is weird and poor." It's like they were aiming for Punch-Out, and then didn't where to stop. When Street Fighter 2 became a global hit, and their characters were seen by a diverse audience, Capcom handled the possible controversy as well as they were able, with as little work as possible. A redrawn ending, and a palette change. All finished!

Their newfound social conscience could only go so far.

Still, at least they handled the self censorship way better than they did when they scared themselves into forgetting Double Dragon existed, and worried about the heroes hitting women in Final Fight. ("But what if we said it was transgender underboob?")

None of this was PC culture going mad. It was just Capcom trying to be edgelords and giving themselves stomach cramps. Now that they've added more characters of color, and erased every trace of their original plans for Dhalsim, the Street Fighter 2 intro has been restored.

It's hard to argue this "controvery" didn't improve the product.
