Sega Saturn Unlocker Review

Postby Alucard1191 » July 2nd, 2019, 8:57 pm

I have finally received my sega saturn unlocker, and while I haven't tested any games that require the RAM upgrades or the region unlock ability, I've tested it with burned games and it works great. Starts with a small options screen, hit play game with the A button and away you go.

No modding, no opening up your system, just place it in the cartridge slot and go. I definitely like it.

There seems to be only 1 issue, and that is it doesn't function as a backup memory cartridge. Which forces you to use the ridiculously small on board memory.

Most things like action games don't use much memory, but most RPGs, which is my purpose for this cartridge, have huge save files.

Shining Force 3 is what I'm going through on my Saturn mainly, (with side trips to Dragon Force, damn that game is fantastic.) and a save file takes 201K. The memory is 451K. Now, if it just stays at 1 save file as I go through the series, I will be fine, but if I need a separate file for each game, I'll need 3 save files, which the system can't hold!

That might end up being a problem long term, we'll see.

Overall I'm giving this thing a 3.5 out of 5. If it had memory backup functions it would be a 5 out of 5 must have accessory.
