NHL ‘94 - best hockey game of all-time
Shining Force 2 - the best strategy RPG until Final Fantasy Tactics
Streets of Rage 2 - best console beat’em up of all-time.
Gunstar Heroes - was amazing at the time and has held up extremely well.
Road Rash 2 - the best of the Road Rash series.
Toejam and Earl - way ahead of its time and still a great co-op romp in 2021.
Sonic 2 - the best of the series. Perhaps the best father-son/daughter game ever made (with kid helping out in the role of Tails)

i would put Comix Zone on that list

One life and no continues against an army of damage sponges? It's a game that punishes you for playing it organically.

If it's an A+ game, then Double Dragon III on the NES is the best brawler ever made.

Sonic 2 seems like the most logical candidate, since VGC himself has it ranked a the #4 console game ever. Hard to say a game is #4 ever overall, and doesn't get an A+ on the system!

I agree it is hard to pick out any Megadrive games that REALLY stand out against all of the others. There truly are just so many great games for it; in my heart of hearts I think it is my favourite console of all time. I would say though Dave, there are two of my favourites that you haven't reviewed - Wonder Boy in Monster World and Mega-Lo-Mania. Both games are great (the latter will take a bit of time to learn, but trust me it's worth it) and I'd love to find out what you think of them.

Critic I don't think they will ever stop this conversation until you give a Genesis game in A+

It's funny, I think I actually prefer Streets of Rage 1 over 2. Maybe it's the music or the characters, I dunno.

Likewise I think the original Road Rash is better than the sequel, despite the lack of split screen. The music was amazing.

NHL '94 already was that game.

Nothing beats hearing that boss music and unleashing hellfire.

This is also how I feel, and I don't understand why so many people feel Road Rash 2 is the better game. They are both very similar but the first one has some really groovy tunes.

The split screen 2 player mode in Road Rash 2 is something I never play.

I prefer SOR1 also, and a big reason for me is the shorter levels. The levels in SOR2 are a tad too long for my taste. (One of the pleasant surprises for me of SOR4 is the fact the levels are surprisingly brief. For whatever reason I thought they would end up making huge levels that would drag on for way too long, but they're pretty much the perfect length).
