i came across this excellent video today that reveals just about everything you wanted to know about the Colecovision from Jennell Jaquays who designed Donkey Kong for the Colecovision..she talks about the Vaporware catalog screen shots and information on different games and it finally answers the question "did Coleco make Intellivision games bad on purpose?"

TL, DW: She claims it was the best they could do.

Worth noting, is that none of these people had prior experience with the consoles in question. And they lacked proper development tools. And coding doesn't seem to be their area of expertise.

It's even worse than 3rd party Saturn developers only being able to access one cpu because the debugger/emulator has to be physically placed where that cpu would go. (Source: Chuck Tolman, Saturn VR Racing programmer.) Or Jaguar developers dealing with an entire Pokedex's worth of undocumented bugs in their kits. (source: Rebecca Heineman: industry legend)

So I can believe what Jennel's saying about the 2600 game being a minor miracle, but the Intellivision? C'mon. Even that Mario sprite is nowhere near being acceptable.

I might buy it if she actually worked on those ports herself, but if one team decided to make things easy on themselves, how would she know?
