I ordered my copy (standard version) today. I'm trying not to learn too much detail about the game because I want it to be a surprise when I get it!

Garry Kitchen tweeted that it's a 128K game.

To have included that much ram in, say 1980, would have resulted in a game costing over $6,000!

In 1980 sure, the 8K games only started in 1981. Tech was rapidly advancing and dropping in price though, to the extent that it would have been possible by the mid 80s as seen by the 128K games for the NES, such as Kid Icarus in 1986.

Yep back when the 2600 came out designers had to claw, beg and threaten to get every kb.
It’s amazing what the 2600 can do with 128k!

Sure, especially considering that, unlike later systems like the NES & Genesis, third parties on the VCS weren’t licensed. I don’t see how this game would be any less “official” than, say, Pitfall.

It's still old-school, the Activision team utilized a modular approach so many smaller programs are loaded in for the sequences.

Their modular approach is scalable in both directions and would allow them to compete in the classic Atari Art Show SillyVenture where they strictly limit the competition to classic hardware from bitd and a maximum program size of 32K.

SuperCharger Disk BASIC also has modular architecture ranging from 6K to 2 MB anyone can use to write classic games like the Activision team! :)

I'm competing in Gdansk this year using the modular approach with KC OS 12:
