What retro system do you play the most?

Postby Retro STrife » April 5th, 2021, 11:42 am

What retro system do you play the most? For me, it's been my Genesis the past few years. NES not far behind. And lately SNES.

Yesterday, I was thinking about the Saturn and how it's one of my favorite classic systems (more than Genesis), but I barely get around to playing it. It got me wondering if that's usually true of other retro gamers too -- your most-played systems end up being different than your favorites?

But here's the thing - my Genesis is always hooked up, so it's always there and convenient. The Gen/CD/32X stack is too much hassle to unhook, so it's a permanent fixture on my TV stand. Plus, 16-bit games are just so easy to pop in and play, while still feeling like they have depth to the gameplay.

The SNES for me, hands down, the library is just too memorable I could talk about it all day, but I'll keep it simple.

Definitely the PS2. Although I do log a ton of time on my 2600.

1) Genesis
2) N64
3) PS2

Genny gets about 50% of my gaming time, still. N64 gets 25%. PS2 doesn't get much, anymore, but it is such a great console with a massive amount of quality titles. The remaining 25% is split between everything else.

Probably the Genesis because it's kind of an "impulse" console. Just pop in a cartridge and you're ready to roll. Most of the games have a very "pick up and play" quality.

Mostly the nes, just because the games are pick up and play. After that, Genesis and Super Nintendo about equally.

I'd need to write a list.

But usually, any system that features ridiculous limitations and a vast library of creative solutions to explore. (Whether or not they succeeded.) My favorite console generation was early polygon based, and my favorite gaming computer is still the ZX Spectrum.

Genesis, SNES and Game Boy, with GBA and NGPC close by.

Does Turbo Mini count? ;-)

Over the last couple years it's been the following for me:
1.) Atari XE
2.) NES
3.) Atari 7800 (I use this system to play 2600 games as well)

If a Mini Amiga or a CD32 were available, I'd have a go with those. Never had an Amiga, though there are many games I would play on there that normally I would have access to the SNES/Genesis ports (quality may vary, see SNES Gods), but not the Amiga only games.

I was thrilled when I got my Switch that I was able to play D/Generation, a game that I first saw as a kid for the CD32 in EGM#55... really basic game, but fun
